Hey guys, sorry I haven't been around much lately. I recently "accidentally" got a degree and graduated from Northeastern University this past Friday. I am a doctoral student in their pharmacy program, but I earned a degree (B.S.) in Toxicology along the way to the PharmD. Also, the day of graduation I moved from Fenway/Roxbury to Brighton (Cleveland Circle) and I just got the internet working yesterday.

Anyway, I wanted to post a video that I assisted a friend of mine film in and around the city of Boston on Tuesday, April 28, 2009. I hope this isn't perceived as spam, but I assume with all of the people interested in Boston here, that many may find this interesting.

Tom Guilmette works as a cameraman for NESN (and is at work right now), and he is, in my opinion, the best cinematographer in television sports. He is the man who perfected the signature shot: zooming into a ball immediately after it is hit, tracking the ball zoomed in as it flies toward the stands, and zooming out as the ball lands for a home run. He is above the Green Monster on the other side of the left field foul pole. His camera has been hit by foul balls, and his name is mentioned on air at least once a year it seems.

Anyway, I got to know Tom through our mutual interest in photography. After helping him film/produce a NESN short "Sport in Society," I met up with him at 4:45 am on the banks of the Charles River and we lugged a ton of video equipment through 90 degree heat to film a short film about Boston. Tom has won an Emmy for his past short films, and loves to experiment with the latest greatest videography equipment.

Tom wrote a much more in-depth blog about our day: http://www.tomguilmette.com/wp/my-blog/archives/1588

And, finally, here is the actual video: http://www.vimeo.com/4395828

I make about 7 cameos in the video, but most are for only a split second. But two of my cameos, one with my Nikon D70, and one of me walking past the fountain at Post Office Square, last significantly longer.

I hope you enjoy the video as much as we enjoyed making it. Tom is a really talented person, and I'm honored to have the opportunity to know him.

Sorry for the long post :)

And for those of you wondering about the title, it's not called "Ultimate Boston" because Tom is a pretentious person who is declaring his film the Ultimate Film, but because he was testing out a new product called the Letus Ultimate (to replace his Letus Extreme), which, in layman's terms, is something to connect his camera to really expensive Nikon lenses to achieve a smaller focus range (aka, more blur in the background of the video, sharper focus on whatever is IN focus) -- to make it look more like a movie and less like a "video"

Excellent film, I doubt my monitor really gave it justice. He should have (he probably did do) the video entry for Boston in the ESPN Titletown (or whatever it was called) competition. Boston for sure should have won that.

Props for having it on Vimeo, rather than YouTube. Although, he probably had to b/c of the file sizes. Vimeo is so much better, anyhow.

I'm cracking up watching people eat their lunch in slow motion.

Vimeo is so much better, anyhow.

Yeah, this guy is a pro. That was some serious cinematography porn.

Edit: OMG BABY GEESE SO CUTE

Beautiful work.

One small criticism, however. I felt like the shots of people biting into things went on for about an hour and a half. Maybe I just have food issues.

Yeah, it's nice, but there was a little too much stalking of lunching women...

Yeah, I was going to mention that. Especially two in the beginning with a meatball sub, and with a ham sandwich. Reminded me of that stupid Hardee's commercial, except the woman in the commercial was a little higher on the out-of-10 scale...

The shot of the Red Line crossing the Longfellow with the sailboat (Community Boating?) in the foreground was pure sex.
