Saturday evening's program traces a three-part trail of influence and homage. We begin with the underrated film Fritz Lang regarded as his personal favorite: While the City Sleeps - unavailable on home video and screened here in a rare RKO Superscope print.
Lang's cinematic depictions of humanity's darkest shadows run like a thread throughout Toutes les Histoires, part one of Jean-Luc Godard's epic Histoire(s) du Cinema, a magnum opus produced over ten years for French television and never before screened in its entirety in the Boston area. This screening marks the beginning of our ongoing presentation of Histoire(s)
