Funny how they call Boston Ship repair a current tenant. That building has had broken windows and been completely vacant for at least 3 years. Always wondered what would become of it.

Falcon -- Boston Ship Repair is considered a "Current Tenant" under the basic concept of "Last Legal Use" -- they are the last entity [outside of possibly some people "unofficially occupying" the site] who paid the city rent on the site. Probably about 15 years ago [circa Gulf War II] or so when they did some ship repairs in the Navy's big Southie drydock*1

New information [to me at least] -- they are now [since 1995] part of something called Northeast Ship Repair*2 with access to old US Navy facilities both in Boston and Philadelphia

I presume that the drydock while in the hands of Massport or City of Boston is still somehow accessible on an as-need basis to the Navy -- much like a City or Town Easement on "your homestead"

Busy times at the old Boston Naval Shipyard South Boston Annex circa 1958
The South Boston Naval Annex, Massachusetts (USA), vertical aerial photograph, taken in May 1958. A large number of ships are present, among them twenty Reserve Fleet escort aircraft carriers. Identifiable ships are USS Norfolk (DL-1), at left at the end of the wharf extending from the drydock and the aircraft carrier USS Antietam (CVS-36), in the lower left. Of the mothballed ships, the follwing are identifiable: Upper row, beginning with the fourth escort carrier from the left: USS Nehenta Bay (CVE-74), USS White Plains (CVE-66), USS Rudyerd Bay (CVE-81), USS Hoggart Bay (CVE-75), USS Mindoro (CVE-120), next to the dry dock, USS Dayton (CL-105), USS Suwannee (CVE-27), USS Chenango (CVE-28), the destroyer next to the pier is USS Charles J. Badger (DD-657). Lower row from the left: USS Salerno Bay (CVE-110), USS Gilbert Islands (CVE-107), USS Marcus Island (CVE-77), USS Manila Bay (CVE-61), USS Kasaan Bay (CVE-69), USS Sargent Bay (CVE-83), USS Shipley Bay (CVE-85), USS Savo Island (CVE-78).

Boston Ship Repair

The Navy actually still uses it. Probably 4-5 Navy transport ships have been repaired, painted etc there in the last year.

WTF? Are you making statements and then countering you own statements on what you thought was your burner account?

I believe I know who's the future owner/tenant of this building very well but can't elaborate anymore. #tease

WTF...Are you talking about!? The building is and has been empty for 5 years. There is NO tenant. The ship yard HAS been occupied for several years. They are not developing the ship yard...they are developing the brick building on the edge of the property.

Did you know that there are active ship operations there? The building has remained empty with a red X on the door for several years.

Recent piece in the Globe about this development:

Pretty spectacular design but perhaps a little OTT, something more like WS's parcel N & P might work better here?

Thanks for posting the image (I'm technically challenged :)) Actually looks better now I'm seeing it again!

Falcon -- HUH??
by The "Shipyard" do you mean the Dry Dock aka Graving Dock?
In the context of the old South Boston Naval Annex -- there were many buildings, the Graving Dock and several piers as was shown in the 1958 aerial photo in my earlier post

A lot of the old Naval Annex got reworked when the City of Boston took over most of it after the Navy left about 1970's. Some of the remainder then got reworked as the Ted Williams Tunnel and I-90 Connector were being constructed during the Big Dig. There is also former Navy & Army Base land that Massport controls including the remaining piers and the North Jetty

The Dry Dock itself comes with a small building -- the pump house -- all the rest is now just the Ray Flynn Marine Park

Yes, the dry dock/repair dock. I assume we are saying the same thing with different terminology! The Navy still sends ships here, I did not mean the Navy itself controls it. Routinely the hospital ships and the Navy cargo ships are in for repairs here. The small building you mentioned is a pump house though? It appears more like a 2-3 story former brick office building. I believe it sat next to 24 Drydock which was torn down several years ago.

^So bizarre having a convo between accounts...

Anyways, I like the shuttle to and from Dudley to here.

What are you talking about? BTW glad to hear you take a shuttle.

Falcon -- not to get too too deep into the SeaWeeds

The pumphouse is/was on the side of the Dry/Graving Dock -- small brick building with several smokestacks

here's a famous view of the Battleship USS Massachusetts [BB59] in the drydock being refitted before returning to her permanent berth in Battleship Cove Fall River -- circa 1989/90

pumphouse in question -- small brick building upper right with 4 black smokestacks

similar view of the QE2 in the drydock circa 1992 -- no pumphouse visible in the picture

pumphouse is extreme right foreground near the bow of the ship
