Portland International Jetport | PWM

The schedule adjustment may be due to limitations with pilot hours and crew rest seeing these are the longest transcon flights in the country. This change to a Sunday morning departure rewards the crew with a layover in Portland which I'm sure is welcome. Maybe they had a crew deadhead to Portland for the return when the service originally commenced?

Was surprised to find that there are only four New England and upstate New York airports that have service to California and they are BOS, PVD (seasonal), BUF (seasonal) and PWM (seasonal). BDL, ALB, ROC and SYR have zero flights to the west coast and are all busier than Portland when it comes to enplanements. PWM and BOS are the only two airports in the entire region (not counting NYC area) that actually serves more than one California destination. Pretty impressive for a city of only 70,000!

That's what makes sense to me. And Providence for Cape Cod and the islands.
 
Seen on Congress Street today. To my memory this is the first time I've seen an airline target Portland with an "on the ground" add campaign.

Does anyone know if the long term plan is the replace ATC Tower and move it to another location on site to allow for terminal expansion as with the ARFF building? or is the issue that Portland would lose ARFF? I have heard also if the ATC is moved then they lose sectors?
 
I don’t know if it’s possible but I feel like they could expand around the tower without disrupting current tower operations (and giving up airspace to Boston?).

This very armature outline shows a 45,000 sf addition and 6 new gates surrounding the tower instead of having to move it. Especially when the Jetport reconfigures taxiway C to run parallel to 18-36; tons of room would be opened up after that. Is it realistic?
 
Nice effort and probably not realistic only because the vision is to continue any future terminal expansion to the west. However, there has been talk in the past of eliminating the dated ground level passenger corridor (Gate 1A and 1B) and replacing it with a second level jetway. This will allow United to accommodate mainline aircraft at Gate 1 instead of only regional jets. The only discussion I recall concerning the tower was building a taller one in the area where MAC Jets is located but that was a long time ago and for some reason a new ATC tower does not seem to be much of a priority at the present time.
 
August enplanement numbers are out and PWM failed to break the record for the busiest month ever by around 7K passengers.

It will be great to see this finished product upstairs once complete along with the baggage claim expansion and new concession space where shipyard is now.
I know people love the animals and think it’s silly, tacky Maine… but you could make that display so much nicer- something similar to what LL Bean has been working on. After all, this is Maines first impression for many.
I know AI is a divided subject, so I’ll add this photo as a smaller thumbnail lol, look past all the imperfections of this photo and imagine if the display looked more like this!

Something permanent, beautiful, that leaves a strong first impression on Mainers and our visitors.
 
You could have that entire back wall done with these new LED video panels (see below). It's a real thing now, and film productions are starting to replace their green screen chroma key backgrounds with them because the video looks so real. You can put the advertising from Clear Channel on this, then work in that iconic image of downtown Portland with the White Mountains in the background maybe every 5 seconds, or just to one side. I've noticed most airports welcome passengers with a Welcome sign or video or audio message from the mayor. These panels are relatively cheap to buy. They assemble in 2x2 foot squares so you can build to the exact size you want. The Jetport would really wow passengers coming down that elevator now.

 
Flights that arrive in the evening and stay over night. “Remain Over Night” is the aviation term. Usually the Jetport, with its 14 gates, sees 12-18 flights RON… with LAX and SFO overnight as well, that was boosted to 20!! Unreal
