MassDOT will be holding a public information meeting on the interim repair project of the Bowker overpass and Storrow Drive eastbound viaduct on Monday, October 29th at 6:00 PM in the Mezzanine Conference Room of the Boston Public Library. More information is available in the attached flyer below.

Update on Back Bay Ramps Alternatives Development and Bowker Overpass Modeling

I also wanted to provide a brief update on the status of the long-range study. MassDOT is currently finalizing the intersection level of service analyses for each of the Back Bay Ramp alternatives. Once this is complete MassDOT will finalize the conceptual design for each of the four alternatives and provide a full comparison of the alternatives for review by the advisory group.

On the modeling front, the Central Transportation Planning Staff (CTPS) will be finished with calibration of the travel demand model by the end of the month. Once that is complete they will begin modeling the a future no-build scenario along with the four future concepts presented at the advisory group meeting in June, shown below.

Concept 1: The Bowker Overpass is removed and all vehicle movements are accommodated on the Charlesgate roadways.
Concept 2: The Bowker Overpass is lowered to an at-grade roadway and the Charlesgate roadways are downgraded to local roads.
Concept 3: A new interchange is constructed between the Turnpike and Boylston Street, with local traffic connecting to Storrow Drive on the existing Charlesgate roadways.
Concept 4: A new interchange is constructed between the Turnpike and Boylston Street with local traffic connecting to Storrow Drive via a new interchange with Massachusetts Avenue.

As part of the modeling work, CTPS will perform a “select link” analysis of the Bowker overpass. The select link analysis will show where the traffic using the Bowker overpass begin and end their trips which will be helpful in analyzing potential transit-based improvements that can be combined with the roadway concepts.

Currently it looks like we will need until the end of November to complete this work so the next advisory group will likely be held in December.

Concept 2 sounds really stupid, if you ask me. Ugh. Why is that even on the table.

Concept 3 I can't really visualize. How will there be a Pike->Boylston interchange exactly?

Concept 4, same as #3, but the interchange of Storrow & Mass Ave sounds much better for improving local traffic flows for the benefit of all.
