Re: 120 Kingston, 29 Story Tower in Chinatown

This building really makes the state street tower POP! Notice how the wall of death is covered up by the trees?

I really wish they hadn't skimped on the Kingston Street side, from this angle it looks retarded having super order windows on the Essex St facade but not the other. It looks like shit looking north from the Chinatown Gate too.

Re: 120 Kingston, 29 Story Tower in Chinatown

The mish mash of windows on that side is pretty goofy.

Re: 120 Kingston, 29 Story Tower in Chinatown

So I'm the only one that thinks that looks awesome!?

Re: 120 Kingston, 29 Story Tower in Chinatown

^ I'm enjoying it much more than I thought

You work downtown, right? And you probably see it in person fairly regularly, yeah?

I ask because from what I've seen in person I thought the glass and precast all look pretty dull, as in their finishes look cheap-ish and it's something that photos don't quite capture (as in they make it look better). The glass on the curve in particular doesn't deserve to be there, and it knocks it down a peg or two for me.

Disagree on that one. The curve and the glass draw the eye to the nicer building- State Street.

Re: 120 Kingston, 29 Story Tower in Chinatown

I think the curved glass looks good in the pictures, although I haven't seen it in person yet.

Re: 120 Kingston, 29 Story Tower in Chinatown

I agree that this building looks much better in person than in pictures. The curvy glass wall looks pretty good with the sun hitting it.

Correct. I have been seeing regularly from all angles.

It's the circle of life on this forum. Check out the 1282 Boylston thread; it just had its first facade mock up posted. People are disgusted. I'm sure in a year when the building is complete, people will be praising it just like this one.

Saying "it draws the the eye to the nicer building" doesn't seem like a disagreement with what I said.

Pretty sure I didn't trash it. In fact I believe quite a few only trashed it because the alternative was infinitely better. If that never existed, I doubt this one would have gotten as much heat.

Don't agree with your generalization.

Even were it true, you might find an explanation in Emerson's "Self-Reliance"!

Re: 120 Kingston, 29 Story Tower in Chinatown

No offense, to any of you giving even a modicum of praise to this thing, but have you seen other buildings, anywhere? But this is just a residential tower, you'll say, or it's just like this everywhere else too. True on both counts, but excuses nonetheless. Awesome? What about a two-dimensional shape extruded 290 feet upwards and clad in an equally two dimensional array of materials that have nothing to do with this neighborhood could be defined as awesome? Let me grant that the convexity of building in plan is interesting and seems to respond in a way to the context, primarily just the physical shape of it. This is good, but design doesn't end there. That should have been step one, not one and the last.

This thing reinforces the notion that preservationists aren't necessarily motivated by the potential of losing some great piece of architecture, but by fear that what will replace it will be no better or even worse.

Brutalism has left a lot of people with PTASD.

Re: 120 Kingston, 29 Story Tower in Chinatown

Like so many recent buildings, the architectural style of this building is "bottom-line-ism". Nothing more.
