Next up, a total 1980s time capsule out in Ashland. Owned by an older couple who've lived there since 1996. This is the most complete '80s/'90s collection of architecture and furniture I've come across thus far, and it may as well be my own grandparents' place circa 1992

Remember when every hotel bathroom looked like this?

Purple perfection right here. Normally I'm supposed to remove trash bins and floor mats but for this property I said NAY

I love this house as well, except I think the front of the house (first photo above) could have been a bit more interesting. I've seen many mid-century moderns with a more dynamic curb appeal. But the rest of the house is exceptional, IMO.

mid-century modern is a due for a comeback...

Next up, a total 1980s time capsule out in Ashland.

If you've spent any serious time in the central parts of MA, this style is all over the place (and yes I know Ashland is not Central MA). Tons of housing built out this way in the 80's and 90's.

Edit: This might end up being my new favorite thread

^^ Totally get there's tons of '80s/90s stuff out that way, but just gonna repeat that what makes this one a standout is that the furniture is completely period correct as well.

I never know what condition a property is going to be in until I'm walking in the front door, so when I come across a total time capsule like this there's almost a falling-in-love feeling as I spend the next hour or two pouring over this place that someone clearly cared about but basically aged out of following the trends.

PS I'll have a gorgeous Arlington craftsman to share very soon!

In the heart of Arlington Heights, I got to shoot this gorgeous craftsman over two separate days plus a twilight shoot. The layout is a bit weird but the woodwork makes up for it. Yours for a cool $1.5 mil!!!

The other bedrooms were fairly boring and with a bare minimum of furniture, plus I'm keeping the photos here to 20 or less. Click the listing if you want to see more.

It's hilarious (but also sad) to me that all of these extremely expensive properties tend to have gas stoves. People paying top dollar to breath toxic fumes whenever they cook.

Are you fucking kidding lol? Gas is the superior option for cooking, I'd be hard pressed to buy a place without gas. Electric cook tops are trash.

The bigger problem I see is where the fuck is the ventilation fan and shaft above that stove?

Count me in with the "gas is good" contingent. I have a gas stove in my house and it works fine. Never had a problem with smells or fumes.

You may not notice it but you are still breathing in toxins:

And I'd just also note that gas stoves are the subject of a decades-old propaganda/advertising campaign to normalize their use in homes despite the harmful environmental and health effects:

have you ever used an induction cooktop before? they are so much faster than gas

have you ever used an induction cooktop before? they are so much faster than gas

Most places don't have induction and they're expensive. Also cooking on induction is a non-transferable skill unless your next place has induction.

Enjoy gas stoves for now. Massachusetts just passed an energy bill that will allow towns to pass by-laws to ban fossil fuel appliances in new construction; with certain stipulations. Not saying its a bad thing because we have to start changing our ways to preserve the big blue marble. But I too will miss them if I live that long and still be cooking.

Fossil fuels and buildings
Lets some cities ban fossil fuels

One of the more controversial aspects of the original bill was a provision giving 10 municipalities the ability to ban fossil fuel hookups in new construction or major renovation projects. The governor said repeatedly that he had concerns about how this would affect housing prices and availability, and his amended version of the bill included a lot of changes in this section.

The legislature ignored his suggestions, and the pilot program remains the same as in the original bill: Only cities and towns that have met the state’s 10% affordable housing target can qualify, and the requirements won't apply to health care facilities and science labs.

Additionally, participating municipalities must collect and report detailed data about emission reductions, construction costs and utility bills.

Have you ever been to a restaurant before? Guess how many of those use induction.

You cannot cook numerous, broad styles of food using induction top ranges. You cannot use a wok. You cannot make anything which benefits from cast iron. You cannot roast peppers stove-top, which shuts down a whole pile of Mexican, Central American, and North African meals. You can't even firmly slam down your pan when making an omelette without worrying about cracking the glass or ceramic surface.

If you're the type of cook who boils frozen broccoli spears, stove-tops your rice, and rarely cooks with hot oil, I guess you can do well enough with induction. But I've never met a professional chef who prefers induction, and as an amateur who really enjoys making a lot of wok and cast-iron prepped meals, it's a nonstarter for me.
