River Street Redesign | Cambridge

I passed by the under-construction plaza in Central Square. It is, still, under construction. This seems to be happening in fits and starts. A bunch of work will get done, and then nothing seems to happen for weeks or even months. It looks like the whole plaza has been fenced off with construction going on for well over a year. The old street furniture was ripped out almost two years ago.

For someone who knows little about the actual work that goes into this, is this normal? How does a project like this take two years? It's some new sidewalk, trees, and bus shelter.

The whole project is going surprisingly slowly. It's possible the plaza work is tied directly to the road reconstruction.

It's slow-moving but the scope also includes utility work, which is always a pain and takes forever. City's website says that it should be substantially completed a year from now (started 2022): https://www.cambridgema.gov/Departm...rojects/2022/riverstreetreconstructionproject

Even so, that reflects a year of delay - the last internet archive copy of the page from July signposted a Fall 2025 completion.
I moved to the area back when Cambridge was finishing up the plan for Western Avenue. That was scheduled to take 2 years and ended up taking 4. So, this seems about on target or slightly better than scheduled for reconstruction of a similar length street. Got kept up many nights by the Western Avenue project and had to move because the lack of sleep got to me.
