Rose Kennedy Greenway

These two parks look like they've caught a degenerative disease:

The MassHort parcels, most definitely unfinished. These are probably the reason that the Greenway's official grand opening won't occur until October.

Ditto on the shots!
But as for the "scenery" depicted, the quality of park fauna is fully equal to the park flora. Happy hunting, bald dude.

I think it's a riot that the two worst parks are the Mass Horticultural Society's parks. If Elm Bank is any indication of how the Society takes care of their property, then these two parks are in big trouble. I am speaking specifically about the mansion they occupy there. It is such a beautiful building falling into complete disrepair. It is so bad that I'm surprised they are allowed to conduct business inside the building for fear of it crumbling on top of them. I hope I'm wrong and that somehow, someday, that we may see a scaled down version of the originally proposed garden under glass if they can ever get their act together. I walked the Greenway last weekend and noticed some dead trees and too many scruffy looking areas. I'm hoping that everything lives long enough to enjoy the protection of the Conservancy when it takes over, which can't come soon enough.

I don't think it's fair yet to judge the quality of MassHort's parks if they are still under construction.

^What about them is still under construction?

Is there any place along the Greenway for an Arc de Triomphe type piece? I remember seeing a structure on this blog that stood near Haymarket years ago. I believe it was to commemorate WWI vets.

If we were to commemorate recent wars, wouldn't we have to erect an Arch of Defeat?

^ The mud-puddle on the MassHort parcel seems pretty emblematic of the current quagmire.

By "under construction" I mean that they are still planting the landscaping.

I didn't realize that they were doing any additional plantings...just thougth what they had planted hadn't taken as well as the rest of the parcels.

FINALLY - Something worthwhile is going up on the so-called "Greenway".

Something actually useful - a beer garden/outdoor bar/restaurant. The Grand Canal has been given a temporary approval to install a deck in the back of the Terra Cotta building.

This sad little deck is actually going to be the coolest and most exciting thing on the entire stretch of this horrid median strip. Even though technically, it's not "on" the Greenway.

The deck (with no concrete support, it's just temporary)

Hopefully this will act as a trend setter.

What does the deck overlook (if anything)?

The Times has a nice patio the 'overlooks' the Greenway (if you look past four lanes of traffic.)

Still think that the thing to be built on the or near the Greenway is a grand roofed Public Market

Just came back from Budapest (Grand 19th Century Austro-Hungarian Empire Public Market of Iron and Glass) and Oxford (slightly less grand English public market of wood and glass + some iron)

Take one of the ramp blocks cover and put up a light and airy glass canopy sitting up on stainless steel Doric columns (a kind of homage to Quincy Market) -- provide the floor with utility boxes (a la Boston Exhibition Center)

Then let the vendors (permanent, semi permanent and temporary move in)

The rest will then take care of itself

Westy

PS: hoping that the Museum and the New Center folks would just get together and raise enough money to allow the Horticultural Wintergarden to be built down near Dewey Square

Then casually let the private sector litter the outer walls of the Greenway with shops, restaurants and voila you will have a well used public space

Hmmmmmmmmmm, why in the world would (or should) the Boston History Museum or the New Center for Arts and Culture folks raise money for the Horticultural people? IMO, MassHort had YEARS to get their act together and accomplished nothing....they should have been booted out of the mix years ago and the parcels alloted to another group. If anything, MassHort should visit the National Gallery's Sculpture Garden down in DC, an absolutely beautiful space surrounded by three very busy streets. Very disappointing that MassHort is still in the mix.

That garage is next!

A better site for the Hard Rock than before... but still not the best building for the site now that the Expressway is gone.

ahahaha you got a picture of two of my good friends in that band!
