Roux Institute Campus Development | Portland

The Christmas "tree" kind of reminds me of this monster one in Lowell. They've been decorating it like that since 1999.

I remember it well, and I agree! Portland's lack of inspired neon brings me down.

I'd love way more inspired neon - the Roasty situation, though, does not bode well for this.

I haven't been at that end of downtown recently; which sign was it that was causing the complaints?

Imagine they had a Northeastern University- Roux Institute of Technology sign that was inspired by that sign to put atop the old baked bean factory. That would be a great addition on many levels!

You know, I don't know exactly. I've just seen the complaints in various online places.

Residents, or the older ones, are rather sensitive when it comes to large signs. If it's been around for a long, long time and quite visible (e.g., The Citgo sign near Fenway, or the Eastland one above the Westin), they will fight for its continued existence, tooth and nail. I like the Hopeful one on Forest Ave., though I'd go with a Grateful one instead, as the former is more a statement of weakness, really, and the latter could be the glass at least 50% full. Travel to other mid-sized cities in the U.S. The majority are desperately Hopeful, and then some largely Despicable. Portland's glass, comparatively, I'd put at maybe 85% full. That's a good drink to have. And bigger cities, relatively? Boston, at 90%. Every city has its avoidance areas, and Portland's is still relatively small. But it still stings.

The Hopeful sign is totally appropriate and in no way shows weakness. You just don't get the jist of the concept.

Hope springs eternal... Without action, hope is largely an empty idea. We talk and debate about problems and seemingly insurmountable walls, over and over again and yet nothing is done. But agreed, having optimism is still a healthy mindset to have, a being positive against pessimism. As Freud said (I love this phrase), "The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result." It's why I like Elon Musk. He does it. He doesn't hope. He just does it. He will make changes. Think about telling you kids when they compete at school that you are "hopeful" with their performance. No, it should be, "You have worked hard in practice. I know you can do it. Show us."

"Liking" Elon Musk is incredibly offensive. He "does it" because of how is brain is wired and his known heavy use of ketamine. He lacks impulse control. He also has very little original ideation regarding his projects, instead swooping in after the real brains have already done their thing. And then there are the whole DOGE and Neo-Nazism issues. WOW. F'ing WOW.

He is impatient with inefficiency. He certainly fixed the politically censoring Twitter. Key Tesla patents are public domain--he wants it that way for the obvious of reasons, and it has spurred on the industry. Starlink is pure genius. SpaceX can land a massive sized rocket vertically, while NASA can't get theirs off the launch pad. Neuralink shows promise. Many are jealous of him and he doesn't care about offending people. He gets things done despite. I'm livid over the $93 billion (estimate) DOE spent on their friends during the transition of the Presidency, so kind of on the sly (recent news from Congressional hearings). Musk would not have allowed that.

Yeah. He's still a POS.

He certainly does the hyperloop. And then DOGE? Let's fire all these positions we dont understand or didn't even properly study just o rehire them again? Just doing a thing isnt virtuous if you're an idiot
