I've always been a little underwhelmed by the northern bank of the Charles River in Cambridge. Biking along the esplande this weekend made me realize that while the interaction between Storrow Drive, the park and the river is by no means ideal, Boston has fared much better than Cambridge in my opinion.
I'd love to hear from someone re: the transportation engineering benefits of splitting up the east- and west-bound lanes of Memorial Drive other than allowing for U-turns. It seems to me Cambridge could have a significantly more esplanade-esque park if the land between the lanes was removed and shifted south of the roadway to be along the river bank.
Just some thoughts I had and I'd love to hear from others about why it was built the way it was, plans to improve, etc.
