I took a drive down 128 yesterday, and stopped off for a few pictures of the gigantic radio masts in Newton/Needham. The triangular lattice tower is the tallest freestanding structure in New England, reaching a height of 1062 feet (just 1 shy of the Eiffel Tower!) http://wapedia.mobi/en/WHDH-TV_Tower
The overall tallest mast in the area is 1296 feet. I'm pretty sure 2 of them reach this height but definitely positive that one of the tallest is the mast with the forked top. Here are a few pics of these monstrous structures. Sorry about the quality; many of them were captured from a moving vehicle. Feel free to add more pictures/information about this!

Nice shot KZ. This might sound like a dumb question considering I started the thread but, does anybody know what these towers are actually used for?

As far as I know this is the tallest overall structure in Massachusetts

And this is the tallest freestanding structure in New England!!! Each color change represents approximately 100'.

The tallest mast in Mastachusetts is in Boylston, with a mast height of 391.8m and overall height of 411m, compared with the Needham mast which is 363.4m/395.1m tall. Think the freestanding one in Needham is still the tallest freestanding structure though.

Ohhhh, built in 2004. I had no idea about this one! I'm going to go check it out soon and see what it's all about!

Fun to look at it on Google Maps, zoom in and only one view has the top of the antenna in the shot.

I went to check it out today. Saw it off 290 by exit 24, but when I got off I couldn't find the tower! I think it was down one of the weird side streets but it was really blocked by the forest. So, didn't get any pics unfortunately, but I have confirmed that it exists! I had no idea, although I think I may have seen it once before.

Ha! The Mount Greylock Veterans Memorial Tower is the tallest manmade structure in the state. Just playing with semantics you know.

Is the top of this tower higher than the top of the WGBH tower on Great Blue Hill?

It's significantly higher, since the base sits at a higher height to begin with. Central Mass has a higher elevation than Eastern Mass.

There's a "decoy" tower in Hudson, MA that's approximately 1200'. This is the one I originally thought was the tallest, but realized it was in the wrong direction from Boylston. At night it flashes red, while the one in Boylston flashes all white. I think I have pinpointed the Boylston tower and am going to try to confirm that once and for all after work tonight.

What is a 'decoy' tower?

It means it's super tall but not quite the tallest one, and it's in a location close enough where it fooled me into believing that it was, in fact, the tallest structure in the state. So it's a decoy from the true tallest, which is hidden deeper in the woods.

Another local example of this is Plympton is a decoy town to prevent people from getting to Plymouth.

A final local example is the set of streets surrounding Prospect Hill in Somerville. The stone tower with the observation area is on Munroe Street. However, this is surrounded by decoys including Summit Ave, Grandview Ave, and Boston Street.

I hope this answered your question. It's just a term I enjoy using.

Good luck doing it before the storm hits.

Oops, it already started snowing here in Worcester. Just a little band though.

I found it! Luckily didn't hit a storm. Here is a link to the exact location. For those of you who want to make the pilgrimage, the best viewing point is the corner of Adams St and Longfellow Way (although looking at a map, I probably should have driven down Longfellow Way instead of turning around). The houses up there are GARGANTUAN too!
