What's so terrible about this? This is a good thing. Housing costs have to come down.

I dont think the fact that Boston is under-built is anything to celebrate. It tends to keeps the high cost of housing artificially propped-up and perpetuates sprawl.

So are we supposed to be happy that, even in this crap economy, the cost of living here remains beyond the reach of so many young people and others with modest incomes, who continue their exodus to more accommodating cities?
 
No, the bad thing is that there are swaths of the city that are giant holes in the ground or half built towers that are filled with squatters. Think of an entire neighborhood like the Filene's "tower" hole and you get the idea.
