The red line is just under the street there. Maybe that's why they beefed it up? Honestly every time I walk by those facadectomies it feels like they are about to implode.

It's for the lateral forces on the structure. These old mushroom capital concrete warehouses don't even have much in the way of a lateral structural system, and with much of the interior scooped away, there's no system to resist wind and seismic forces. The temporary steel helps bring any potential load down the foundations while the new structure is built.

Kudos to MIT for preserving the industrial look of that part of Cambridge. They should get an award not only for historic preservation, but also for excellent architecture, IMO, historic or not.

Agreed. It's remarkable glancing back at @BeeLine 's "before" shots, in particular here in Post 2 of this thread

The work scope of this project is pretty huge.

After sitting vacant for almost two decades, the various Engine startups are bringing new life to the 155,000-square-foot, MIT-owned building.

The Engine is open, move-in started after Labor Day.
There is enough space at 750 Main to eventually host 80 to 100 companies or about 1,000 people (including The Engine’s roughly 35 employees). More than 50 startups are there today ....The Engine will continue to maintain its 30,000-square-foot location at 501 Mass. Ave. as a satellite space, as well as its 42,000-square-foot spot in Somerville.
