It's all about controlling the revenue. The Celtics are tenants in the Garden and the Bruins make the lion's share of the money there. If it penciled out for the Celtics to build their own arena (without public subsidy, of course), a new ownership group might well consider it. A lot of shared arenas - MSG, United Center, DC, SLC... - have the teams either under the same ownership or engaged in a joint venture for the venue. When that doesn't happen (in Phoenix or Brooklyn, for example) it can be very difficult to get teams to share. Heck, in LA it's proven difficult to keep two teams in the same sport in the same venue, with every team wanting its own bespoke thing (one unexpected exception: the Lakers, which like the Celtics play in the NHL owner's venue). For some reason on the sports hub and a few other places theres been talk of possibly trying to build a new stadium near encore for a celtics only stadium. Sounds like a massive waste of money, time, and space. I dont see it happening and I’m not sure where the rumors are coming from, but moving the celtics out of the garden would be blasphemy.
I've had the thought that the Jacobs would be good buyers for the Celtics, if only for that reason. I'm sure Celtics fans would flip out but it's not like the Bruins issues have been their doing in the salary cap era. I do think Boston is somewhat under-arena'd compared to other similar markets, but I also don't see how a dedicated building for basketball helps anyone. It's all about controlling the revenue. I don't think Everett is where I'd put it, though.
