USS Freedom (LCS-1) visiting Boston

The USS Freedom (LCS-1) is docked at the Charlestown Navy Yard through tomorrow. The crew is offering free tours from 12:30-4:30. I visited this afternoon and was very impressed. If you don't mind waiting out in the cold I recommend checking it out.



 
that looks like the newer class chip, the bridge and superstructure are different than most other destroyers ive seen.

yeah, now that i look its definitely different. the hull is flared more and the antenna isnt as tall or unwieldy.
 
Yeah it's brand new. It was commissioned in November and is one of two designs in competition for production as a new class of ship (littoral combat ships).

It incorporates a lot of new technology and is filling a newly created role. The sleeker construction and reduced mast make it stealthier. It was pretty cool to get to tour such an advanced ship.
