Come for our reporter Steve Adams' photo of how The Davis Cos.' 101 Smith lab building turned out:
Stay for our story highlighting how some developers see the investment fundamentals in West Cambridge (and, to a certain extent, in South Boston) possibly changing back in favor of multifamily development and away from lab space, even if about one-third of the land is owned by a life science REIT that's so far not talking about selling its stake or shifting away from biotech development: https://bankerandtradesman.com/will-lab-slump-translate-into-housing-gains/
Hmm I guess the render I found doesnt match whats being built. It looks like its just going to be a box instead of matching the curves of the existing facade.
The laurent is finished. Came out really good imo. No weirdo random colors, no checkerboard facade, no weird shapes… everything is pretty normal. This is still a 5 over 1 and still used fiber cement facade panels but the color choices look right at home in new england and the balconies, vertical lines, rounded corner, and broken up massing all pull it together to look right at home in cambridge. Its technically 2 buildings but the way its broken up makes it look like 3. I dont think many ppl would complain about something like this being built near them, this makes the neighborhood a nicer place than before. They did still manage to slip in some staggered windows in the courtyard, but its subtle. More of this and less wacky shapes and colors plz.
