Downtown Crossing/Financial District | Discussion

Clearly Boston does not know how to get developments done. Menino is a joke and the people are starting to realize it. Too late now.

Taking the upcoming Celtics-Knicks playoff series a bit too seriously, I think.

Is this guy's mental health in order? I think it's time we remove him for his own good.

Mayor Menino says ?so what? Statement says it all. He does not care about the small business's suffering in the DTX. The only thing this guy cares about is his FAT POCKETS. He is everything what is wrong with our entire Political Base. 20 Years in office and we get this clown saying SO WHAT. It's not about the hole, Its about the business's that have suffered over the last 5 years. After saying something like this he should be thrown out of office.

The words of a scared, little man, coming to the realization that he is a bumbling moron and has no legitimate control over the city he runs.

Don't forget this part...

"...If those New Yorkers want to be arrogant and think they can hold us up ? we?re Boston, we?re much tougher.?

Is there really nothing the city/state can do other than let Menino talk a big game? This is embarrassing...

this should just be sold and torn down, whatever happen to the housing proposal for next door?

C'mon, leave poor Mumbles alone. He must have just fallen off his bike and then fell down some stairs. The poor fella probably had a concussion when he said something so stupid.

they have literally had 4 different gyms occupy that ground floor space in the last 4-5 years. The proposal for a residential tower at this site was, in my opinion, little more than wishful thinking during a prosperous time where proposals, no matter how far fetched, were being thrown around left and right.

There was a discussion a while back as to whether or not the original facade was still under that red, hot mess.

I can't remember if anyone came up with a definitive answer.

It has looked that way for as long as I can remember...way back when it was a Bond Clothing Store.

The buildings at 50 Franklin Street (pictured below) had an extremely ugly facade covering the original facade for many years. The facade consisted of what looked like plastic panels, including a muddy green color if I recall correctly. According to what I could find on the web, the "modernization" of the building took place in 1957. Some time in the 80s, I believe, the facade was removed to expose the original facade which was restored to the very attractive facade that we see today.

Now they just need to make that area more bustling. I really think that large garage next to 33 Arch (at least in the rear facing Filene's) kills the pedestrian activity and separates this area from the rest of DTX. Well maybe not the pedestrian activities but most people I see there are normally just heading to the train and bus stop, not the stores or restaurant.

Wendy's on Washington Street closed last weekend. Is this in preparation for a demolition?

Aldo Shoes, further down the street, is also now closed and vacant. This storefront long ago was a second entrance to the Orpheum Theatre, and had a big vertical sign and marquee over it.

Yikes. Between Aldo, Wendy's, Barnes and Noble and a few others, those couple of blocks are in rough shape.

City should pay (desperate times call for desperate measures) for the places inside the Corner Mall to relocate to that block. Their being inside a little mall doesn't help the streets much. But I don't know who owns the mall, they'd obviously be pissed...

Plus it would make cheap Asian food slightly more accessible to my stomach. OH GOD CRAB RANGOON.
