I've dealt with this before. Companies don't want to move into vacant buildings.. there's just a sigma for it.

I don't have an agenda.. just making a comment on personal experience.

The fence around the new block of grass came down. The plan is to break it up into three areas: a park; a dog park, and a soccer pitch. This picture is standing in the park and looking toward Binney. The Biogen building is going up though still only one crane in place there is a second crane base ready toward the left side of the photo (not visible).

I have not seen any formal plans for the park area, only hearsay at this point. I think they are going to carve it up and put trees, paths, planter beds, etc. It was just quick and easy to cover the whole thing with sod for the year or so before the park spaces will be addressed.

IIRC the Biogen building is supposed to have a sort of pass-through courtyard so it is more connected with Binney Street. That is a really long block, so to have a solid building would give a feeling of being cut off from the neighborhoods and I think the architects wanted to avoid that.

Cool, thanks for the info! I'm heading back to the US in September for the first time in two years...I'm very excited to wander around both Boston and Cambridge to see just how much everything has changed.

Rumor is, this cube is the mockup for the building on Binney that is going up.

That stone looks a lot like Novartis' facade on their new building

Somebody asked this question about the cube mock up during one of our condo meetings. The building was never mentioned but we were told that it was for a building in East Cambridge. However, it does look like the materials seen in the renderings for the Novartis Building under construction. But it is definitely not the mock up for Twenty/20. I have not seen one yet.

Got it, not part of Twenty/20, thanks.

The buildings in East Cambridge along Binney street (5 plots in all) are part of the Alexandria Center. Biogen Idec is the tenant for the buildings currently under construction. Though the Alexandria Center is supposed to include some residential and retail, so Biogen Idec will not occupy everything.

The Novartis building is going up in Central Square at the border of the Area IV neighborhood.

My best guess is that the cube is a mockup for one of the buildings in the Alexandria Center, possibly the one at Binney and 3rd that is currently under construction.

Found some more info about the tenants for Alexandria Center:

ARIAD Pharmaceuticals will rent roughly over half of the two five-story buildings – or approximately 244,000 square feet of the 386,000-square-foot facility, at 75-125 Binney St., with additional potential to expand through June 30, 2014...

The pharmaceutical company joins Biogen Idec Inc., which is expected to move into its 305,000-square-foot facility at 225 Binney St. by the end of 2013.
