Ferdinand Building Renovation + Addition | Dudley Sq | Roxbury

Re: Dudley Sq's Ferdinand Building to be Restored/ Renovated

Dont have an image, but the vertical slits at the top of this were all illuminated with blue neon at night the other day. Looked nice.

Shitty pic but crown alternates between different colors at night.

Are that many lights already out?

Re: Dudley Sq's Ferdinand Building to be Restored/ Renovated

Best new building in Boston in the last 5 years, no doubt.

Re: Dudley Sq's Ferdinand Building to be Restored/ Renovated

Such a shame that we have to rely on the City to build great contemporary architecture because millionaire developers are too busy lining their pockets with the latest cardboard box.

And European architects.

Developers think in terms of disposable buildings, useful only for their 20 year depreciation life. And design accordingly.

Re: Dudley Sq's Ferdinand Building to be Restored/ Renovated

Many architects here in our fair city build institutional quality architecture, and are great designers. Don't assume that the only reason this is good design is because it comes from overseas. Our great talent in this city are just not often chosen for either political reasons, or someone wants to buy a name, not just great design.

Sasaki is part of the architectural team for the Ferdinand development.

My observation about European architects is that I am skeptical that American architects would have worked with brick on this building the way that Mecanoo did. Souto de Moura has received a commission to design a building for a small and difficult site in Washington, it will be interesting to see what he comes up with.

Re: Dudley Sq's Ferdinand Building to be Restored/ Renovated

For the last 15yrs I've envisioned Dudley as an innovative and leading economic center--as downtown Roxbury. How I feel seeing this investment is beyond words and this area has the potential to continue its shaping into an American icon as it recharges the neighborhood's development. I've looked upon the Ferdinand building for over 25yrs in it's crumbling state and in my teens imagined it restored.

What a centerpiece! I consider this development a leading architectural work promoting Boston's past, present, and future. I love my neighborhood.

No doubt? I would put this behind Atlantic Wharf, Liberty Mutual, and Mass Art Dorm without thinking twice.

Re: Dudley Sq's Ferdinand Building to be Restored/ Renovated

Wow! Surpassed my expectations. I love how the entire building echos and takes motifs from the old facades, but doesn't try to imitate them like PoMo tried to do with a dash of irony. I can't wait to see this one for myself.

Re: Dudley Sq's Ferdinand Building to be Restored/ Renovated

I hadn't been in Dudley since the 90s, but had jury duty down there this summer. The place is bumping, especially compared to how empty it was the last time I was there.

Re: Dudley Sq's Ferdinand Building to be Restored/ Renovated

Depends when you go down there. Weekends can still be desolate.

Still gotta attract the all-day, every-day mix of activities. But things are looking up.

They did a great job with this one.

Rumor is reif on several channels today that the Mass DOT will be relocating to the Roxbury area [perhaps Tremont Crossing] with the Transportation Building site sold to Emerson

later -- Here's something about it on the BBJ:

DOT moving to Roxbury?
The Massachusetts Department of Transportation is mulling a move from its current headquarters in Boston's Theater District to a soon-to-be-redeveloped site in Roxbury's Dudley Square. According to the Boston Globe, the potential move was part of the agenda during last night's Boston Redevelopment Authority meeting to consider, among other things, a potential land transfer that would enable construction of a new Department of Transportation building. The building would be part of the Tremont Crossing development, a long-delayed $350 million development in Dudley Square.

That would definitely boost both Dudley and the current DOT site

Presumably Emerson would use the Boylston / Charles part for Dorms and perhaps academics and then lease the frontage along Stuart St for development of private residences and retail
