Route 3 Widening

Not sure how the Braintree Split could be majorly improved. It's pretty locked in. XWAY can't be widened either.

that's too bad... i hope they don't do this... i like the foliage in the median, they ruined rt 3 round lowell when they cut it down..

Yes it's really nice to look at when you are sitting in traffic not moving. Say what you will about this project but the need is very apparent. The state has done all it can by expanding transit down this way and the highway is still clogged. IDK if a toll HOV lane will be that much of an improvement but any capacity will help.

sounds like sarcasm but thats true. much better than a jersey barrier. i dont see how this would fix things if 93/braintree isnt widened as well.

And I think that's the sticking point. There's no easy way to accomplish that.

Busses -- the south shore problem can be fixed in stages:
  • 1. New Bridge across the Canal -- open road tolling
  • 2. Designate Rt-3 to be I-93 rebuild over the next decade to Interstate Standards -- widen with Open Road Tolling
  • 3. Designate Rt-25 from I-495 to I-93 as extended to be I-193 rebuild over the next decade to Interstate Standards
  • 4. redesignate I-93 from I-95 to I-93 N [SE Expressway] be I-393 connect I-393 to I-93 South with a new road directly south of the split, retain the split for I-393 to I-93 N
    Thus:
    • someone heading S on I-93 wanting to go to the Cape would stay on I-93
    • someone heading S on I-93 wanting to go to Dedham would take the I-393 exit from I-93 and follow the existing road to I-393 after S Shore Plaza
    • someone heading N on I-93 heading for Dedham would take the new I-393 exit and follow the new road to I-393
    • someone heading N on I-93 heading for downtown Boston would stay on I-93
    • someone heading East toward Boston on I-393 would stay on I-393 to the ramp to I-93 N [the current road]
    • someone heading E on I-393 wanting to go to the cape would take the new exit and the new I-393 to I-93 S ramp
[8] 5. Interstate class highway interchange and some I-class highway for Rt-44 in Plymouth -- eventual full limited access from I-93 to I-95
  • 6. then its time to finally fix the I-93/I-95 Woburn fiasco

I may well be missing something, but how does beefing up Route 3 to interstate standards fix the geometry and density problems confronting the Braintree Split and the Southeast Expressway?

The practice of allowing people to drive in the breakdown lane needs to be eliminated.

It would also be nice if they could add an exit for the South Shore Plaza for those coming up on route 3 from the south as the 3 and 93 merge in Braintree gets backed up on the weekends a lot of the time because people from route 3 are trying to get over to get off the exit for the mall.

Everything related to the Route 37 exit is a mess. A similar issue exists with cars entering the Northbound on-ramp and immediately trying to cut over 3 lanes of traffic to stay onto 93-N.

Ultimately, any modification to northbound route 3, the split, etc. is folly without some solution to Savin Hill. It all backs up from there.

CommutingBostonStudent, I moved your post into a new thread here. I figure we may as well have a crazy highway ideas thread too.

Busses the idea is to split the Braintree Split essentially into two separate splits

The existing split is maintained for North-bound connections

In a sense this is "overlaid" by a new South bound exit leading to a connector between the existing highway and the newly designated I-93 extension following the Rt-3 footprint toward Plymouth

The other change would be to build a local connector taking all the traffic not heading for Boston off I-93 N

beefing up local roads might work better than bushwhacking through the towns
