New Haven

Off topic but it was interesting to learn that New Haven is the birthplace of three pop music legends. Karen and Richard Carpenter (Carpenters) with 21 Billboard Top 40 hits, 15 AC #1 hits, 3 Grammys and over 110 million in worldwide records sales, and Michael Bolton with 16 Billboard Top 40 hits, 9 AC #1 hits, 2 Grammys and over 75 million in worldwide record sales. Wonder if there is a street, marker or statue recognizing their contributions to the world of music in the city?

there is a series of murals throughout downtown called New Haven Notables that recognizes native contributions to pop culture, entertainment, sports, science, etc... i am not sure how often it is updated. https://www.artidea.org/sites/default/files/downloads/notables_book.pdf

What's the tower in the back left here?
that is part of the proposed development, a phase 2 or 3 tower. Phase 1 is apartment + retail as shown in the render. Phase 2 and 3 calls for a hotel tower and a separate life science/lab office tower

Back when that was the closest Ikea, I used to go down to that part of New Haven fairly often, never realized that was a hotel. Really cool building in my opinion, nice to see some updating take place that doesn't detract from the external shell.

I don't know anything about any projects going on but I found a couple cool pics online.

They recently had a mini building boom in Wooster Square near the state street station.

I always make it a point to spend time in Wooster Square when traveling through New Haven— it’s architecturally rich and a delightfully preserved space.

Used State Street for the first time this past winter after having used Union Station 1000 times over my life. What a horrible place to be stuck waiting for a delayed train on a particularly cold day!

I was in New Haven today and noticed a construction project well underway on State Street at Chapel that includes the restoration of several existing structures and a new building rising on what was a former parking lot. After some sleuthing I was able to find that Beacon of Boston is redeveloping the entire block into affordable residential units with ground floor retail. This is a highly visible location as you entire into downtown New Haven and should have a positive impact:

There’s an impressive overhaul of State St. occurring and it’s detailed in this video. Massive bike/ped improvements are on the way!

Its a start , but across the Street needs to be redeveloped badly..and the whole area needs a pedestrian safety overhaul.

I saw there was a new project on Olive Street across from Olive and Wooster recently, which led me to flip through some of the development news in Wooster Sq lol. One of the buildings traded ownership recently (https://www.newhavenindependent.org/article/hines_sale) and I found this little nugget which I thought was funny.

Hines has owned the properties since 2019, when it paid the Stamford-based Spinnaker Real Estate Partners a combined $15 million for the development sites. Spinnaker, in turn, had worked with city government to fight off years of lawsuits from the Philadelphia-based owner of the Strouse Adler apartments across the street seeking to stymie new residential construction at the long-vacant former Comcast site. Hines broke ground on the 230 new market-rate apartments and ground-floor retail space in 2020, amid an ongoing building boom that has seen hundreds of new rentals built along a two block stretch of Olive Street between Chapel and Union.
The neighboring apartment building delayed the project by 4 years with lawsuits lmao. The FOOLS they were next door who didn't know new shiny development increases nearby rents /s
