Biking in Boston

Do you know what the extent of the work was? Anything significant seems like a missed opportunity to narrow the roadway and put in bike lanes at curb level (which would then take up less room and allow for parking).
It was only some minor water main repairs. The town has a policy to repair leaks prior to paving.

Not sure if this was posted, but it looks like Neponset path is extending further into Mattapan/Hyde Park; however, I haven't heard any updates on the extension to Morrisey? Everything just says expected soon (including in this article stating spring opening) but otherwise crickets.

Anecdotal to some degree, but a member of my neighborhood Facebook page made mention of a delay in railing installation on the bridge component between 13B and the Tank; that is the sole hold-up at this point, though timing to resolution wasn't disclosed.

Note the state lists the contract as complete, though: https://hwy.massdot.state.ma.us/ProjectInfo/Main.asp?ACTION=ViewProject&PROJECT_NO=608943

This is good to see - currently, there's no actual access to the river between Mattapan and Fairmount because of the thick brush.

As a UMASS Boston alum, I've been looking forward to that trail opening ever since I was a student there in the late '00s. Especially because as a runner I once measured the following course and found it to about a half marathon (and a very flat half marathon too!):

I went and visited it today. There is a mural behind the apartment complex by Boston Bowl:

This is looking south along I-93:

Here is the path, looking north alongside the gas tank:

Looking south from Morrissey Boulevard:

And here is UMASS Boston from the boardwalk:

Finally, there is an area along the boardwalk with a few benches that overlooks the marsh:

Now to organize that half marathon!

“We have some location ideas that we will be bringing to the public for feedback in the late summer or early fall,” Ingles said in an email to Brookline.News.

In the meantime, Ingles and her team also want to hear from the public for new ideas about the best spots for the new stations.

Click here to visit the crowdsource polling app the town created. As of July 2, the current leading choice: the area near Longwood Station and Longwood Towers. Second place is an area on the north side of Coolidge Corner.

SO glad that this is done! Rode it yesterday and it was great, the bridge part was not steep at all which was very nice.

That said, I cannot wait for the Morrissey Blvd redesign project. The sidewalk along Morrissey was in rough shape and often very thin. I would be weary of bringing children out onto that with just a easy fall from one of the chips in the sidewalk right into the high speeds of morrissey right on that bridge.

I hate when the state just sits on their fucking hands when some aspect of something is completely falling apart just because there is some fabled eventual complete reconstruction in the distant future.

I’ve seen this so many times with sidewalks and bicycle paths. Like, they really can’t afford a few thousand to have some dudes come in and just repave the fucking sidewalk so people can walk on it without tripping and ride on it without getting a flat? Is that really too much to ask?

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation’s Shared Streets and Spaces grant program will fully fund the purchase of the e-bikes and fund continued program operations costs. The 20 new e-bikes, as well as about 100 conventional bikes, can be found at 18 stations in Salem.

Here are some of the new stations that will be installed in the coming weeks (pending final permits).

Allston/Brighton:
  • Chestnut Hill Ave at Winship St
  • Reservoir Rd at Beacon St
  • Cambridge St at Warren St
  • Walbridge St at Comm Ave
  • Ringer Park - Webley St at Armington St
  • North Harvard St at Harvard Way
  • Gardner St at Harvard Ave
  • Gardner St at Alcorn St
  • 39 Brighton Ave
  • Market St at Mapleton St
  • Washington St at Mina Way
  • Faneuil St at Bothwell Rd
Fenway/Kenmore and Mission Hill:
  • Boston Arts Academy
  • Commonwealth Ave at Kenmore St
  • New Edgerly Plaza
  • Fenway at Museum Rd
  • Fenway at Forsyth Way
  • St Alphonsus St at Horadan Way
  • Huntington Ave at St Alphonsus St
  • Huntington Ave at Colburn St

The new Bluebike stations in Allston-Brighton, Fenway, and Mission Hill have been selected! There's a lot that were not selected due to "negative feedback from the community", but there's still quite a few new spots. Plus some existing stations have been expanded in size, like the Deerfield St spot near Kenmore.

The Clippership Connector in Medford appears to now be open, based on this Instagram video the algorithm fed me:
Definitely opened, I've ridden it a few times with my kids, most recently from Blessed of the Bay, through Medford Sq, along the mystic paths, to the Minute Man and back home on the Somerville community path. Felt pretty great that I was basically on shared use paths the entire way. The signage from at the end of Clippership is non-existent though and I'm still not sure what the best way to get from there to the paths along the Mystic across rt 16.

Walking in this morning I watched this truck give zero regard to the cycle track on Milk Street. Just turned into the lane and presumably drove right over the flex posts to leave.

Nothing quite like disregard for the cycle track when there is a parking/loading space not even a block east directly adjacent to the courthouse.

not even a block east directly adjacent to the courthouse.

Mental threshold to seek legal loading space before deciding to park illegally with almost certainly no repercussions is like...almost nothing. We need better curb management but really carrots will not work without enforcement. Automate it yesterday.
