Permit Pulled for Redevelopment of Charlestown YMCA​

“A permit valued at $30M has been pulled to begin work on the redevelopment of the Charlestown YMCA. Plans approved in December 2023 call for renovations to a portion of the building to create 100 affordable units of rental housing. Roughly 17K SF of space will be leased back to the YMCA to continue operating their facility and aquatics program.”

Those 2 on the left look really good when theyre new/modernized. I can think of 100 buildings that look like those, but are 60 years old, crooked, shitty paint, and look like ass, but those are shnazzy.

They cheaped out a bit on this, but it still came out nice imo.

Definitely would have looked better with the more detailed brick, bay windows, more ornate glass, overhangs…etc. Still it came out as a nice background building tho imo.

Still goes to show though that with some precast brick, a couple precast concrete trim panels, and a mansard roof you can still go a long way for pretty cheap/simple. In the end its still much better than most of the fiber cement party panel shit.

Cool, I’m just noticing this Rutherford Ave one — I didn’t realize that street has an independent little stub deeper into Charlestown, pre urban renewal. Kind of the like the fragment of broadway in Bay Village.

About 1972, Rutherford Ave was rerouted as a multi-lane highway to the south. Here is a 1971 aerial showing the old original route for Rutherford Ave, from www.historicaerials.com
