Skyline & Aerial photos | Portland

No, just a screenshot of some drone footage that I found.

If the Canal Plaza/Old Port Square Tower gets built, the "height" (and maybe heart) of Portland will be slowly moving (over a period of many years) from the far end of that photo (along Congress St), to the left in that photo (along Temple/Union St)... would love to see the parking garage to the left of the Casco get redeveloped into something tall to enhance that.

A few snaps from yesterday:

One of my favorites from just under the time and temperature sign back in late eighties. That photographer and I found our way to the roof at the same time and I refused to get that close to the edge seeing the lip would not be much help!

Excellent view of many of the high rise roof tops at the time with the Fidelity Building being my favorite when pertains to safety due to its well located projections.

Roof of 511 Congress looking west. This photo clearly shows the additional height of the boiler shaft on top of the Westin Hotel (former Eastland) which was completed in 1927. The rooftop pool that Ozzy Osbourne and his band caused to permanently close down was located on the right side near the white elevator shaft.

Please correct me if I’m mistaking what appears to be a naval vessel in post 254!
You are correct Tom. Those were Spruance class destroyers (one is berthed at the Maine State Pier) that were outfitted with sonar domes and other equipment at BIW's Portland facility prior to their shakedown cruise. That was one of the largest floating dry docks (800 feet) in the country at the time and BIW got a great deal on it because it was WWII surplus and had to be transported from somewhere in the middle east to Portland in eight sections if I remember correctly.

Posts 255 and 254 appear to illustrate a significant change in Portland’s harbor history- the transition from military use to tourism.

BIW had a ship repair facility here from roughly the mid-80's to 2000 or so. In that era, Thames St. and the Eastern Prom Trail didn't exist, and Commercial ended at a hard left turn onto India St. I remember, walking to work at Auto Europe from the parking lot we were using (I wish I had known then that the weird concrete slabs in the ground were the old Grand Trunk boarding platforms), hearing the loudspeakers from a docked Navy ship giving leave orders, saying "the area bounded by Union St., Middle St., Pearl St., Commercial St.... I want you to stay out of that area!" The dredged area for the drydock was repurposed for the Megaberth (Pier 2 Berth 2, I believe the proper name is... where the largest cruise ships now tie up).

(Their ship repair business was moved up to Bath around the time they introduced level launches and got rid of the slanted launch ways.)

I notice the Norstar Bank signage on One City Center! That didn't last long... Norstar had purchased Northeast Bank (based in Westbrook), and then they were bought by Fleet which wound up absorbing several other large banks in the 80's. One side effect of that... thanks to the chain of mergers, Bank of America thinks I've been a customer for 47 years, going back to my school banking account with the original Maine Savings Bank! (Shoutout to that photo from the roof of 511  )
