I would prefer to see a riff on the tower once proposed for atop the old Charles/MGH station.
That would be outstanding.I would prefer to see a riff on the tower once proposed for atop the old Charles/MGH station.

The core three-story art deco headhouse and copper-sheathed platforms *were* built. the 14-story tower wasn't for the reasons you outlined. the crash of '29 didn't immediately impact planning pipelines (and then, obviously, it did). BERy and others wouldn't know that at the time of the proposal any more than folks who planned stuff in late 2019 and early 2020 would know that shit was about to get dicey for a while (and beyond). What private entity would've been proposing a tower in the depths of the Depression*--or was this in fact a government proposal?
(*and I appreciate that the Depression was still relatively innoucous in early 1930 compared to how fearsome and paralyzing it had become on the eve of FDR's inaguration 3 years later, but still...)
Empire state inc built the empire state building during the depression, but yea that was more the exception than the rule. What private entity would've been proposing a tower in the depths of the Depression*--or was this in fact a government proposal?

Most of Rockefeller Center was constructed at the height of the Great Depression, 1932-1935. And Rockefeller Center was totally privately financed; it was not a government jobs program (although it got John D. Rockefeller Jr. a lot of PR points for employing 40-75 thousand construction workers at the height of the depression job losses.)Empire state inc built the empire state building during the depression, but yea that was more the exception than the rule.
