ACKS | Alexander Center Kendall Sq. | 50 Binney | E Cambridge

ACKS... Who comes up with these names? The developer's cat dealing with a hairball?

What's up with the poster in the first picture? Is that a case of value engineering, or is it a render of 60 Binney and 50 will stay true to the next 3 pictures?

Looks like VE to me. The shiny render appears to be of the glazed front facade in the artistic render below, but the wavy floorplates have been VE'd out and replaced with some flat, angular volumes shifting a bit. Textbook VE.

There is another thread about the rest of the Alexandria Center buildings on Binney. In fact it has most of these same images already. Shouldn't we just rename that thread?

That looks great. Could turn out really nice.

50 Binney

Slurry rigs gone. Going down now.

Beeline -- how deep did the slurry walls go? -- I'm presuming that there is more than one basement level

that's going to be one humongous hole

Just a jocund observation added on the day after Pi or perhaps the on the second day of pi :)

If the construction was repurposed now it would make a great Olympic Swimming and Diving Center :)

Opens up some gorgeous real estate in 2018-- the current Genzyme Center.

Three interesting points:

  • 1. Genzyme will house more employees in less space
    • 500 Kendall St. <350 ksqft as there are a couple of minor tenants with 12 functional floors 950 people
    • 50 Binney St 251 ksq ft with 10 floors up to 1300 people
  • 2. about the right time for Volpe to be rehoused somewhere and about the size of what Volpe needs with good sized floor plates
  • 3. Company Technical people will be involved in the design -- a new definition of VE
Piela said Genzyme will work with Alexandria during the coming year on the design of the new Genzyme Center. He said Genzyme employees will be invited to be part of that process.

“It’s a new chapter for Genzyme,” he said. “It’s part of our looking forward and growing here in one of the world’s centers for life sciences.”

Perhaps this would provide the GSA the opportunity to sell the current Volpe site and move the lab in about 4 years into a renovated 500 Kendall St. Meanwhile MIT's Kendall initiative can get off the ground.

Genzyme moving to new Kendall Square headquarters in 2018

The company will move to 50 Binney St. in 2018.

By Robert Weisman GLOBE STAFF MARCH 27, 2015
It’s the Kendall Square version of trading up.

Genzyme confirmed Friday that it will move out of the company’s Cambridge headquarters at 500 Kendall Sq. -- known as the “Genzyme Center” -- when its lease expires in three years. About 950 employees will move from the signature building that is one of the best-known landmarks in the city’s life science cluster to a new headquarters to be constructed nearby at 50 Binney St....

The new building is expected to house about 1,300 employees, including some new hires as well as employees who work for Genzyme and its corporate parent, Sanofi SA, at various other locations....

“We looked at a lot of factors in making the decision,” Piela said. “One was accommodating our anticipated growth. We also looked at the age of our building and the inefficient use of space.”....

Genzyme moved in 2003 to its Genzyme Center headquarters, then considered state of the art, signing a 15-year lease with Biomed Realty Trust.
