The New Retail Thread

I have a faux-fur knee-length winter parka from Uniqlo, just a shade over $100. It's the warmest thing I've ever owned, and no animals were plucked or skinned in making it.

There was someone in there this evening taking all the stuff off the walls and cleaning. It's anybodies guess at this point.

Allbirds is opening on Newbury Street above the new Caffe Nero.

JP Licks on Newbury Street is now open - and also open in South Boston.

What's up with Jacob Wirth's? The latest news story I can find is from August

I heard a rumor the owner was a million dollars in debt... then a random fire in the attic a few weeks later. Then again I thought there was a sale at some point. I dunno... I don't it's coming back for awhile.

I did see the main door open and someone going in a few days ago. Also the basement entrance was open yesterday. So there might be low key work going on? A few months ago they had a huge amount of garbage piled up in the fenced in area which presumably was the fire damaged stuff.

The business owner was in debt - the building owner is a different party.

This is sad. It was my first introduction and the the driving force behind my love of fine dining. That being said, L’Espalier probably doesn’t have much more to accomplish and considering how the scene in Boston is evolving, it may be leaving at the right time. I’m interested to see what McClelland is doing next.

I originally thought it was Boston's only five diamond establishment but there's still Menton.

Ate there last night for the first time. Was everything I’d always wanted for the years and years I’ve put off going there. Glad I saw the globe article on Tuesday and was able to - improbably - get a reservation.

I do think it’s unfortunate that truly fine dining with the degree of nuance and attention to detail I saw at L’Espalier, and recall from Hammersley’s, is so hard to come by. I’ve never been to Menton although I’ve sat at their little Gold Bar for drinks and snacks. I’m sure it’s great, but the fact that it’s in South Boston rather than in the beating heart of real Boston just makes it inferior to what it might be if it were in the Back Bay or even some old Lockober nook downtown. I guess there’s still New York City for this type of stuff, but it’s sad that Boston is losing it. There’s plenty of very expensive and fairly fancy places that have sprung up over the last 15 years, but I have yet to find one that truly knows how to treat the customers who expect only the very finest, particularly in the training of the waitstaff. There is simply nothing like having service who know how to perfectly strike the balance between attentiveness without being in your face about it and coming off as tryhards. I pin this all on the general loss of grace...

As for McClelland, he’s opening a restaurant in Beverly, or all places.

Grill 23 is pretty great.

Grill 23 can be a moderate hit or a tragic and embarrassing miss in my many experiences but even on its best day it's nowhere near the caliber of L'Espalier or its peers in other cities(and I say peers in other cities because it didn't have any in Boston). In terms of the ratings L'Espalier was playing in the same league as Le Bernardin, Jean Georges and Alinea. Every city has a Grill 23.

What sets a place like Le Bernardin or Jean Georges apart is their service. I've been to each a few times and the level of service you receive is pretty much second to none. I've had mediocre food at both and also amazing meals at both. Food is a very subjective thing, so pleasing everyone every time is near impossible. I also don't think you can compare Grille 23 to a place like L'Espalier - they're go for different experiences and cuisine.

To each their own, I've eaten at Grille 23 numerous times and more often than not my food is great and the service is good to great.

I am not sure if this belongs in this thread, but how do you all feel about the Airbnb bill Governor Baker just signed?

Went to yolenis in Providence...billed as the Greek eataly...pretty awesome. Heard they’re looking for a Boston location. Toms bao bao is also next door and they have a spot in Harvard sq. Keep an eye out if yolenis comes to town.

Honestly a bit extreme to go from 0 to up to 4 different taxes being levied on a unit. Also don't really understand the point of a state wide public registry for short term rental owners...
