I just laughed out loud reading your comment :)
This building looks like a cross between a prison and a public storage facility. It might actually make the Hult bulding next door look good!
Is there any public body or design commission that we can complain to about this building? The...
I've seen this one multiple times in person, and it's looking awful. It would be much better (albeit boring and unoffensive) if it was just all glass. I don't understand the concrete with misaligned window slits look. It reminds me of this now demolished two-story Brutalist DEC building in Maynard.
I'm guilty of this. As time goes on, I've lowered my standards and expectations around how I want new construction to contribute to this city's built environment.
This AVA could have used higher quality materials on the facade, it could be just a little bit taller given that it's next to the...
I completely agree, very well said. I live near this building. There was a point a few months ago where I was prepared to hate it given how the facade was turning out. Now, I think it looks OK - not good, but not terrible. The corner of it that you can see from North Point Common actually looks...
The comparison between this and the Duomo in Siena is hilarious. That said, this building isn't bad, and honestly will be most noticeable by people driving on 93.
I wonder how sound proof the windows will be? Will residents by able to hear 93?
They've done a good job at street-level...
What percentage of birds who die from hitting glass skyscrapers are sparrows, pigeons, and seagulls? I would venture pretty high, just because these birds are so common in our cities.
Re: 115 Winthrop Square | Financial District
Completely agree.
Transit is one of two major solutions, the other is what GW suggests above: modern urban zoning plus subsidies to the less well-off (and not segregating the less well-off from everyone else by clustering them into giant housing...
This building does look dated and disjointed, but at least it's interesting, has similar proportions to its neighbors, and will only be noticed by people walking down that particular stretch of Salem Street.
Re: 115 Winthrop Square | Financial District
This is a good question, does increasing the supply of luxury homes put downward pressure on costs for everyone?
Intuitively, I would say yes. Assuming demand is greater than supply, and the luxury buildings aren't creating induced demand (ex. if...
Re: 115 Winthrop Square | Financial District
You are probably correct that building booms are typically associated with increasing rents, not steady or decreasing ones. What you are leaving out is the confounding variable that is causing both the building boom and the increase in rents -...
Exactly why I don't think they can consider an up-and-coming rustbelt city like Detroit, or any city without an adequate existing tech scene. Boston really is high up there in the running, I wouldn't be surprised if we get it.
Exciting times! I love visiting the L.L. Bean store in Freeport. It will be great to have a closer location, especially for returns and exchanges. I do wish they would make some of the clothes less baggy, but maybe as I fill out over time this will become less of an issue.
Back on topic ... I...
I would love to see this go forward. I agreed with many of the criticisms of this tower, chiefly with reorienting the bulk of the tower away from Worthington Street. That said, there absolutely is a precedent for tall buildings in this area, and a tall building should be built.
Re: Residences at 399 Congress St (formerly Madison Seaport Hotel)
The render doesn't look bad! I am not a huge fan of the white (or light gray) precast though. White precast can be good (Twenty20), but often comes out bland (Avalon North Station, 100 Pier 4). Even going with some other color...
