The state’s highest court on Wednesday handed Mayor Michelle Wu a major victory, ruling that the city’s
$325 million project to renovate White Stadium in partnership with a professional women’s soccer team does not violate state law, effectively allowing it to move forward.
The Supreme Judicial Court’s decision officially puts an end to a years-long lawsuit to stop the controversial project, driven by the local environmental nonprofit, the Emerald Necklace Conservancy, and a coalition of residents who live in the neighborhoods surrounding Franklin Park.
The decision also clears the path for work on the site to continue. The renovated stadium will serve as a new hub for Boston Public Schools Athletics and the home stadium for the National Women’s Soccer League team Boston Legacy FC.
