Roads and Highways General Development Thread

But if that person lives in Lexington (a town with twice the population of Bedford), if there's no Lexington Center station, from most of the town it will be faster to keep driving to Alewife than to drive the wrong way out to 128 and take the Red Line in. That's definitely the case for the street I grew up on, which is a 6-minute drive from the 128 station site per Google Maps.
At any rate, even if you got the necessary support in Lexington for a Red Line extension, both having it end in Lexington Center and not having a station in the Center are, I guarantee you, going to be absolute non-starters.

Any theoretical RLX pretty much has to end at 128 (or 2) for it to be realistic.

I can see a case for an Arlington Center or an Arlington Heights terminus. It's a very long gap from Arlington Heights to a theoretically viable next stop.

It would serve a comparable role to Wonderland, Forest Hills, or Oak Grove.

DCR Tames Traffic Next to Boston’s Arnold Arboretum

Nice to see some (slow) progress on safety from DCR. Would really like a more aggressive road dieting initiative on all parkways.
This change is very welcome. I've biked this stretch many times, both before and during construction. When biking this trajectory between JP and Dedham, this has been the worst part of the ride. SW Corridor <-> Arboretum is great. Centre St bad. VFW is honestly very good (I know this is a controversial opinion) with mostly wide shoulders and little cross traffic, except for a couple mediocre pinch points.

Unfortunately, this project still doesn't improve the VFW/Centre intersection or the Centre/Allandale intersection, which are both especially tough for northbound cyclists (left from VFW to Centre and straight on Centre through Allandale are both tough, as is), with the current lane configurations. While this project will make this route more viable for southbound trips, I will likely still choose and alternate route northbound due to those unaddressed pain points. I usually opt for (and recommend) either:
  • Newton + Brookline route (Nahanton -> Dedham -> Brookline -> Newton x3 -> Goddard), which is long and scenic.
  • Right through West Rox and Rozzie (Spring -> Centre -> Belgrade -> Corinth -> Washington), which is certainly not low stress, but has no points as bad as VFW/Centre or Centre/Allandale.
If DCR can address VFW/Centre and Centre/Allandale for northbound cyclists, this would be a much better route.
