    Historic Portland Discussion

Much was destroyed, but it could’ve been even worse. The Spring St arterial was a 4-lane road which stretched from High St to Union St. Many buildings were destroyed to make way for this, but it was supposed to extend all the way to Franklin arterial. Luckily preservationists stopped this from...

MassDOT Rail: Springfield Hub (East-West, NNERI, Berkshires, CT-Valley-VT-Quebec)

Wouldn’t full regional rail warrant at least 2019 service levels? Even if it’s all day service as opposed to peak hour, I would think it wouldn’t take long to reach that level of demand

MassDOT Rail: Springfield Hub (East-West, NNERI, Berkshires, CT-Valley-VT-Quebec)

https://www.bostonglobe.com/2023/03/17/business/east-west-rail-could-be-train-nowhere-if-postal-service-doesnt-move/ I didn’t realize that one of the major hurdles for E/W Rail is in fact SSX. I may have missed that in the documents… Either way, I think this should put to bed the whole SSX vs...

This just happens to be my dad’s friend. When he picked up arrestees, he always used to get on the radio and say “We’re off to see the wizard!” He never got in trouble, but I can’t imagine that flying today

@Cosakita18 I love this thread. I’ve always enjoyed looking at old pictures of Portland, especially the aerial photos of the waterfront. The city looked so much more bustling back then, and it gave off big city vibes through some of the pics. The bottom is the old Vaughan’s Bridge to South...

https://nyc.streetsblog.org/2023/03/23/exclusive-andy-byford-to-join-amtrak/ While it’s unfortunate for us that the T couldn’t land Train Daddy as new GM, I’m excited that Andy will join Amtrak leading the high-speed rail development. This is a great move

I would imagine anything remotely like this at Lechmere, if it was there at all, was VE’d out

    Portland Passenger Rail

Do you know if the tracks can accommodate 90mph with minimal upgrades (other than PTC)? If so, would CSX want to allow trains traveling faster than 79? I know that the St Louis-CHI segment of 110mph had to be a completely separate track on the same ROW. Is that the minimum FRA requirement for...

The Flynn Cruise Terminal also has a glass boarding bridge Edit: that pic is the old one. Here’s the current bridge: https://www.adelte.com/project/boston-raymond-l-flynn-black-falcon-cruise-terminal/

MBTA Commuter Rail (Operations, Keolis, & Short Term)

There is also a single track line between Braintree and Boston that the Greenbush and two other Old Colony lines have to share. This is due to the shared ROW with the red line and space constraints on either side of it. The MBTA has said this is a major choke point for these lines and it...

Do you usually experience delays on the Greenbush or does it generally travel slower than the Fitch?

    MBTA Buses & Infrastructure

Some city workers were handing out surveys today about a new pilot program on Summer Street for combined bus/truck lanes. Very promising to see and I hope the program is successful! Center-running bus lanes down Summer in the near future would be huge, especially with the planned BNRD T7...

Regional Rail (RUR) & North-South Rail Link (NSRL)

Could battery locomotives ever be a solution in a partially wired-up system? Perhaps a conversion of the more modern locomotives would work? I feel like that could be a solution for outside-128 bound trains with EMU’s working inside. Maybe if freight railroads pour enough resources into battery...

    Better MBTA Station Names

Also since the original Boston City Hall is located on School Street, I had to make sure we were even talking about Somerville

Cape Cod Rail, Bridges and Highways

FYI this was from 2 months ago. It isn’t an outright denial of funding, just a non commitment to it in the first round. I enjoyed looking at the graphic and reading about what a great project it will be, though.

    Crazy Transit Pitches

I love it! It’d be interesting to do a cost comparison between this and a back bay-south station green line. You might as well have one trolley line enter the pleasant st portal and turn at the Park st loop, like the old days
