Seaport Neighborhood - Infill and Discussion

Re: Innovation Dist. / South Boston Seaport It is nice to have high standards, but the development of the Seaport isn't as terrible as the author makes it out to be. The Seaport is coming together as a dense, mixed-use neighborhood on mass transit with major public institutions (courthouse...

    Frank Gehry is the worst

My unexamined opinion: I think some of Gehry's buildings are exciting. In particular, I like Dancing House, the tower in Hanover, and Disney Concert Hall. I don't like the Stata Center. I feel like Cambridge end up with one of Gehry's least interesting buildings.

Charlie Baker and the built environment

What is Governor-Elect Charlie Baker's attitude toward the built environment? I'm not sure, but there are hints: He lives in a handsome 134 year old house built up to the street in a town square. Compare that to the last republican to beat Martha Coakley in statewide office. Before Scott Brown...

"The Beat" | 135 Morrissey (Boston Globe Site) | Dorchester

Re: Globe Site I'm not seeing the contamination as a major roadblock to a sale and redevelopment. Sure, in places with little development pressure, even the suspicion of contamination can slow redevelopment. But the contamination here has been tested and quantified to some extent, so addressing...

    Salem MA Developments

Salem has quite a lot of recent, current, and planned development for a small city with limited transportation connections. A city website (buildingsalem.com) lists some of what is going on: Blubber Hollow roadway improvements – $1.5 million Canal Street improvements – $16 million...

    Portland Renderings

I agree. This is very disappointing. What is the point of having a station on the peninsula if it is as car oriented and isolated as the existing station.

    Portland's vibrant downtown

Do you know of others with the joint CPD-Law degree? I don't remember any shooting for it during my time there. Although, there was a student with a JD from elsewhere who was going for his MCPD. I find the education combo fascinating because it seems that the land use lawyers I know don't...

    Portland's vibrant downtown

I'd like to hold onto some anonymity in this public forum, since I've expressed very personal opinions here about planning and my job requires some neutrality. But with that said, I've sent you a LinkedIn friend request, so you can see who I am and exactly where I work. My job is split 50/50...

    Portland's vibrant downtown

I graduated in May of 2009 and returned to MA where I work as a planner now. Looks like our time there didn't overlap. I seriously miss Portland and the Muskie experience.

    Portland's vibrant downtown

Losing LL Bean seemed like a big blow to downtown Portland, where it otherwise isn't easy to find practical items like the clothing Bean sells. But Portland never ceases to impress me: Reny's is moving into the adjacent spaces vacated by Bean and Olympia Sports...

    Boston 2020 Olympics

    Foot in the door

How does one go about landing a planning internship in the Boston area? I've been in Maine for almost two years so my network is pretty thin down here.

Silver Line - Phase III / BRT in Boston

Re: Silver Bus Line - Phase III Curitiba has never made their BRT system outrageously expensive by building a tunnel. In fact, their system is operationally financially self-sufficient, with service contracted out to a number of private operators. The Silver Line also fails to fully achieve...

City Hall Discussion - Redevelopment - Preservation - Relocation

Re: Menino Proposes Selling City Hall Menino has it backwards. Government Center and the new city hall should have been built on the South Boston Waterfront, leaving Scollay Square alone. Maybe everything that has been built in the West End since it was razed could have been built on the SBW too.

    Gigantic plans for Westbrook

This project should be unflattened and squeezed into a some of the empty or underutilized Bayside parcels. Buildings could be connected with enclosed pedestrian bridges to attract shoppers during the ugliest weather. The office element could be compressed into one or more towers. Instead of...
