    USM Portland...

...is a horrendously ugly campus. I know they are working to make some needed changes to improve it physically, such as moving the library entrance to face the campus. They should remove most of the surface parking now that they have the garage. The placement of some of the buildings really...

    Is parking too cheap?

Increasing the parking rates at MBTA lots could increase MBTA ridership. Currently certain lots fill up very early because they are cheap. Like the plan in the article cited in this thread, fares could be raised by trial and error to achieve a small vacancy rate. Or for the sake of argument...

    Is parking too cheap?

Very good. I've argued before for market rate parking at MBTA parking lots that fill up at the very beginning of rush hour. Supply and demand can be exploited in these cases to promote more responsible use of the limited resource that parking is in desirable cities. I'm not sure though...

Cheap and easy Boston improvement ideas

A cheap and easy Boston (and Cambridge and Brookline) improvement idea: Make the 66 and 77 bus routes one route. They both run at about the same high frequency and terminate at Harvard Square from different directions. Have it use the bus tunnel if possible.

    Thinking of moving to Portland

Thanks, Patrick. I've had my eye on the new construction at USM-PTLD. I haven't set foot on the campus yet, but it looks like it could use some reorientation. The Wishcamper Center is due to open in Fall 08, which would be my 2nd semester if I enroll.

    Hynes renovation

I'd love to see retail adapted to the limitations of the Boylston side. Perhaps the small size and odd shape of some units would discourage the medium box chain stores that might otherwise go in. There's a convenience store in Downtown Crossing smaller than a small walk-in closet. And picture...

    How Walkable Is Your Neighborhood?

I've heard at least one devout environmentalist consider exercising less in order to reduce his impact on the planet by reducing the amount of food he needs to function. I don't know about my neighbors, but I live in a walkable neighborhood because it is fun, convenient, lively and allows me to...

    Hynes renovation

It doesn't bother me much that the chain restaurants are notably struggling. While I'm not a radical advocate for local businesses, it does please me to see that the chains are failing on their own in the market. Applebee's on the Huntington side of the Pru center recently closed. And I think...

    Thinking of moving to Portland

Thanks, Patrick. Since Portland rent appears to be half of the Boston area's, it is all already affordable to me. Although, nothing will really be affordable when I am a full-time student with zero income. Ideally I would like a $500/per month studio near USM. Very tiny is ok and parking is...

    Thinking of moving to Portland

Moving to Portland There's a fair chance I will attend USM's planning masters program as soon as January. I'll have some specific questions when a definite relocation approaches. Mainly I want to know which areas near USM should be avoided. I plan to live car-free and dirt cheap at first.

    BPL wants Copley station renamed

The BPL is centrally located in a famous square almost on top of two subway and several commuter rail lines. It is one of the most well-known buildings in Boston. There is no confusion about how to get there. How about making a better effort to promote the fact that Copley and Back Bay/South...

Green Line D branch: complete summer shutdown

I have an internship this summer in Brookline Village, so this is very inconvenient for me. I think I may utilize the 66 bus as a more direct route from my neighborhood, rather than the shuttle bus.
