    Boston 2024

Only some of those lines will be completed by 2028, for the most part the dashed colored lines (the LAX/Crenshaw Line, the Purple Line extension, the Gold Line extension, the Regional Connector subway through downtown). The light gray lines have some degree of funding from the last 2 large...

General MBTA Topics (Multi Modal, Budget, MassDOT)

Another option is to keep fare zones, but change it so that the lowest regular fare is a two-zone ticket. The base fare works in any two contiguous zones, so a short trip across a single fare zone boundary never incurs an additional charge. But this would likely require completely re-thinking...

That DMU article was unfortunately a year old (April 2016).

Re: Wynn Everett Casino | Everett Well, depends if you're comparing one municipal apple to another municipal apple, or if you're really trying to compare one dense/urban orange to another dense/urban orange, so to speak. Looks like this article just compared cranes in particular municipalities...

Re: Wynn Everett Casino | Everett Yes, just cities, not metro areas. Toward the end of that article it mentions that there are more cranes in suburban Seattle that are not counted in their total - same would presumably apply to Boston and the other cities mentioned.

None. Study only looked at adults (age 18+).

Green Line Extension to Medford & Union Sq

Aren't at-grade ped crossings actually quite common, even on systems with headways under 10 minutes? Many (most?) light rail systems in the US operate at-grade through the central city area, where headways would be lowest, with only a few having subway or other grade separation. A few systems...

Pretty sure the ridership numbers for MBTA commuter rail usually just includes inbound boardings, not outbound boardings. I could certainly be mistaken, but that could certainly explain the really small numbers typically reported for Yawkey.

    Biking in Boston

Perhaps we could size vehicles to fit our communities (and streets) rather than size communities (and streets) to fit vehicles. Safer streets reduce the severity of accidents, which reduces the number of calls for emergency services.

    Why is Chicago so affordable?

I've never heard the "fear of the fire" idea. I think it was just that central business districts in many (most?) cities were, for many years, almost exclusively business districts with little residential - the Loop included. The surrounding neighborhoods were largely warehouse or...

    Why is Chicago so affordable?

One component, I think, is that it has generally been pretty easy to build in the downtown and surrounding Near North, Near West, and Near South sides - lots of new construction preventing housing prices from getting out of hand. And although it is can be quite difficult to build in many of the...

What would you do to get the T out of its financial mess?

Is FTA involved in highway tolling decisions? Or would that be FHWA? Or is that a different FTA? Not trying to play gotcha, just curious which federal agency is involved here.

What would you do to get the T out of its financial mess?

It might be worth noting, though, that NY MTA PD patrols LIRR and MNRR, but NYC Subway is patrolled by NYPD. Also, although there is a Metra PD that patrols Metra, the CTA is patrolled by CPD (plus the suburban PDs in the handful of suburbs that receive 'L' service). Also, LA Metro is patrolled...

Boston Landing | New Balance Complex | Brighton

Re: New Brighton Landing | New Balance Complex | Brighton EGE is correct, the only Amtrak train that runs there is the Lake Shore Limited (to/from Chicago). Maybe someday additional Amtrak trains will run there if Amtrak restarts Inland Route trains.

Cars, portable toilets, etc - store whatever you want on sidewalks, because who needs them. And besides, can't block any of the street - that's only for driving motor vehicles. Oh, and storage of private property (so long as it's a car).

    Crazy Transit Pitches

And the Amtrak trains that are split/joined are scheduled for rather long station stops in Albany-Rensselaer (Lake Shore Limited), San Antonio (Sunset Limited/Texas Eagle), and Spokane (Empire Builder). Amtrak tested a trainset in the 1990s - I want to say it was the Flexliner, a Danish-built...

MBTA Winter 2015: Failure and Recovery

I'll need to dig up something to double-check, but I was pretty sure that Metra owned all of the Milwaukee-North and Milwaukee-West tracks (purchased from the Milwaukee Road in 1987, per the Metra website), other than a portion owned by Amtrak. For MD-N, I believe the mainline switches from...

MBTA Winter 2015: Failure and Recovery

Thanks for the detail on the Rock Island District. Do you know which section(s) of the Milwaukee District lines are not owned by Metra (or Amtrak)?

MBTA Winter 2015: Failure and Recovery

I don't mean to be nit-picky, but I was under the impression that Metra fully owned the Milwaukee and Rock Island district lines (other than the first few miles heading out from Chicago Union Station which is owned by Amtrak).
