Forcing people to register won't make them more likely to actually post.

It may make them less inclined to visit, though.

Not forcing, just suggesting.

For example:
http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/

"Register (for free) or login to remove this message and many forum advertisements!

Welcome to the Cheap Ass Gamer forums.

You are currently viewing our boards as a guest which gives you limited access to our forums and displays more advertising."

Still drives most people away, and doesn't necessarily increase posting among those who register just to gain more access.

This forum is undoubtedly read by some people of influence (they even post here from time to time), and I think it's better to keep it as accessible as possible if we want our opinions heard.

I agree with czsz. Leave it as is, if people want to register, they can. If they just want to visit, or are a bot, then let them. Although, we've had people in the past claim to be intimidated, and waiting to post after they'd been a 'guest' a good, long time. Plenty of the "long-time readers, first-time posters." It has seemed like we've had an influx of newer members recently, or maybe just members who have started contributing regularly. Shepard, Sicilian, to name a couple off the top of my head.

One of the reasons I like this forum is that there really does seem to be some identity behind each avatar. Amongst those who do post regularly, personalities are easily perceived (whether or not they are honest) and banter between regular posters is fairly, unique? The best way to say it is that if the screen names were hidden, I bet that posters could identify at least a few of the members based on their words.

^^Who said that? Did you guys hear something? ;)

Today I learned that the word bed looks like a bed.

Maybe they're afraid of being called morons.

I try to be (slightly) more tactful if I feel board members are being morons.

Honestly, I'm amazed that someone actually tracked down a largely innocuous comment made about him on an internet forum. Imagine if this were always the case.

"Blandia" - what I call Cafe India in the Pru foodcourt. You know something's wrong when you find yourself taking chilli packets from Pizza Regina to spice up your chana masala.

Edit: It may be Gourmet India. Despite it being my Tuesday routine, I've never really paid attention.

New York's new license plate, to be rolled out starting mid-2010:

Abysmal. Brace yourself for the "at least the governor won't have to look at them" jokes. Thank the angry Puritan God you live in Massachusetts and won't have to look at these "official colors of the state of New York".

The bold colors of the new license plate reflect New York's force and its resilience," said Commissioner Swarts.

Stupid. Will cost New Yorkers $25 each for the privilege.

Its actually a good revenue stream and should be copied here. Require everyone to buy new plates every 2 years for $25.

The color scheme reminds me of the old PA license plates

Look at the email I just got:

---
Dear Constituent,

Thank you for contacting Mayor Menino's Hotline about a street sign in need of repair, which you reported on 2/22/09 at 12:59 AM.
...
----

Great response time! To be fair, I reported three issues that day, and all were addressed within the week.....so why did it take 9 months to send this email!?!

(The other two reports were broken street lamps)

So ugly. Not that the current one is a modern masterpiece, but it blows this one out of the water, and it's only been around eight years. Just another way to tax an already overtaxed constituency.
