What is their reason for wanting a new one? How industrial it would be is probably related to their reasons for wanting something new. And I'd be surprised if Essex actually needs to have any Hazmat equipment...

That's the one.

Reasons for wanting new:

- Structurally deficient / requires extensive repairs
- OSHA non-compliant (e.g. no system for managing exhaust in truck garage, etc etc)
- Old toxic stuff (e.g. asbestos everywhere)
- No locker rooms, showers etc for volunteer FFs
- Need a bigger police station too (e.g. no holding cells currently - they have to drive any arrested people to the court in Salem), and town wants to rehab existing fire station and turn it into PD (existing PD is one garage space and a single-room office on the ground floor of the FD).

The hazmat stuff i mentioned is actually mostly about giving crews a way to clean and decontaminate themselves & their clothes after an event and before they go home. Currently they have to go home in their gear, with soot, blood [shudder], etc etc on clothes and wash them in their own laundry. In addition to being gross there's also concern about containing carcinogens etc.

Beyond that there is no plan to have anything beyond a basic hazmat capability (i think there's probably a regional capability based next door in gloucester and/or Beverly/Salem).

But in addition to those things they also want a gym / workout room for FFs, plus training space, conference space etc. These amenities are apparently pretty standard these days, for better or for worse...

The other thread was locked but the idea that rent control wasnt/isnt popular is dumb as bricks. It was massively popular in the places it actually existed, aka what actually matters about determining the impact. It was only voted down by those living outside of those communities after a massive campaign by land lords and private developers to smear it.

Rent Control helps people already living in an apartment in the city while it hurts people who want to move into the city. I think it's an inherently bad and anti capitalist idea. I know it had its fans though.

Well it isn't really free shit. You still pay rent and it is actually a concession won from capital through struggle, hardly free.

This might surprise you but the USSR and the PRC were, and in the case of china definitely are even more so now, state-capitalist. If you are interested in the concept CLR James writes about it if you are interested in the concept.
