better 111 huntington

Serves no purpose, other than to cost money and resources. Why not make ornament functional and aesthetically pleasing?

Art for the sake of art is one of the things that separates us from lower mammals.

Anti-crown. What is the point of a crown on a buildings? What is its meaning beyond mere ornament? Architects used to ask questions like that.

What? Take some history in architecture because architects did not ask what is the meaning beyond mere ornament. Only a few architecture movement featured the bare minimum. Every other movement had ornaments and style as a REQUIREMENT for a building.

"Because it looks better that way" is sufficient justification for me.

What's wrong with "mere ornament" ?

Nothing. I am very much in favor of MERE ornament. But there are certain things that have significance beyond MERE ornament. Steeples have meaning, shaping a building like a cross has meaning, gothic arches have meaning, and so do crowns.

Yep.

I'm still not understanding why the crown needs any justification other than that the developer thinks it looks good. Can you explain why you think it is inappropriate?

It wasn't even the developer. It was the mayor!

Yes but there also things that do not have significant meanings and serve to only fulfill or complete a building. Such things can be spires, gargoyles, pilasters/columns that don't support weight, and yes even crowns.

armpitsOFmight, stop being lazy and stop fucking trolling an internet forum, you're not a fucking thug!

If they must have a crown theres much better options then r2d2. It kills me that the closest building anywhere in the world to r2d2 is a prominent part of my beloved bostons skyline.

Then don't look at it like an r2d2 building. IMO, it looks more like a telescope with the crown being the lens. If anything, the MIT building already took the title of r2d2.

For what it's worth from an out of city view, I really enjoy 111, it's one of the best looking buildings in my opinion.

It's the most unique Boston high-rise. I wish that Walsh would push harder for developers to push the envelope on design. However I don't want that to come at the expense of delaying development.
