Re: Boston Arts Academy | Fenway

Interesting day to break ground on something across the street from Fenway Park - I'm assuming demo doesn't begin for a week or so... :)

Oh, the demo began last night - - with Nunez' pinch hit homerun!!!!!

It looked like a solid building. Why build new when it could have been renovated?

They considered it, but it wasn't feasible:

“Our old building was originally a postal warehouse, and it was our temporary place that we were supposed to be in, and we were there “temporarily” for twenty years...so that building had been retrofitted for an arts school, but it left a lot to be desired,” she explained.

Staff, parents, and other supporters have been pushing for a new building for many years — an effort that dates back to the era of former mayor Thomas M. Menino. Initially, the school wanted to relocate to the Theatre District, but real estate and construction costs were too high.

Instead, city and school officials, working with the state agency, decided the most cost-effective move was to replace the school’s building, which is located in a former warehouse across the street from Fenway Park.

[The old building was] not well-suited for a visual and performing arts program. It has no theater, support beams run through the middle of dance studios, and rooms are so small that students in art classes are sitting nearly elbow to elbow.

Thanks for the updates, BeeLine! So the new building is expected for 2020-2021 school year?
