Thanks. The first photo shows cars on it; I thought it was closed to traffic until December? (This is actually important for me to know since I may be biking from Somerville to Winthrop soon)

That's an old picture from when they were building the towers over the old bridge before they removed it. There's no span there now

Thanks again. I take it traffic (including my bike) is detoured to the Meridian Street bridge?

Ron, for the foreseeable future, the Meridian Street Bridge will be your best option to East Boston and points North and East. The Chelsea Street Bridge won't be operational for some months.

An additional traffic hazard FYI on getting from East Boston into Winthrop: The Saratoga Street / Main Street bridge is currently half-closed for reconstruction. It's certainly passable on a bike, but it's something to be aware of. You may wish instead to take Bennington Street, past the Belle Isle Marsh Reservation, and cut through Beachmont to Winthrop Shore Drive.

I bike from Chelsea to Deer Island a lot and I think this is the nicest route for biking.

The scariest places on that route are the expansion joints on the Route 99 bridge and (especially) the Meridian Street bridge. They looked like giant teeth waiting to eat my tires. If there had been any rain whatsoever on the days of my rides, or the day before, I would have walked across both bridges instead of riding.

Righteous. Your route is an object lesson in the difference between physical and psychological distance.

Indeed. Davis Square to Winthrop is about 10.8 miles, as is Davis Square to Bedford. But the Winthrop trip sure feels a lot longer.

I noticed last night from the McClellan Highway that the movable truss that supports the road-bed has been pulled into place and raised to its full lifted position. It'll take some time to get the mechanicals dialed in, but this project is pretty close to complete. It's a handsome bridge, but I still think it needs a coat of green paint.

Thanks 02124.
