It's a longer (and less comfortably safe) walk from the Old Port to Fitzpatrick or Hadlock, and that's doesn't seem to impede the draw or experience for the Sea Dogs or HOP. I don't think distance to Old Port is in the equation here. (y)
 
The distance from the proposed stadium at Cassidy Point to Commercial and High Street is 1.3 miles and to the Maine State Pier is 2.0 miles. That equates to a 25 and 40 minute walk at an average adult pace of 3 miles per hour to each Commercial Street location. Along that journey you will find 8 hotels (including Fore St) and one that I didn't even know existed called The Weldon! For comparison purposes, the distance from Bramhall Square to City Hall via Congress Street is exactly 1 mile.

I'm wondering, is a minor minor minor league soccer team really going to command an 11,000 capacity stadium? Just for reference, the New England Revolution are ranked 1,047 in the world. If they won the MLS it would still be practically meaningless, as the highest rated MLS team is still only 230th worldwide. Is there this much demand for extremely subpar soccer?

Rendering of the Ruoff Mortgage Stadium in Fort Wayne, IN that just opened has a capacity of up to 10,000 for soccer and is in the same league as Portland. Hopefully Jonathan, Catherine and the other primary stake holders will visit a few of the new venues (Pawtucket) to find out what works well when it comes to design, physical layout and amenities prior to Portland's groundbreaking. A partial canopy would be a huge positive for the spectators and the additional cost would be well worth it in my opinion.

List of USL League One teams with stadium capacities and average spectators per match. Portland Hearts of Pine is currently ranked second in the league behind Boise and that's with the limitations at Fitzpatrick Stadium.

Even at $50M Portland would still end up with the second best facility in the league. I was aware of the cost of Ruoff Mortgage Stadium but just wanted to show what other cities are building. We have some serious private wealth and major corporations (LL Bean, IDEXX, Hannaford, WEX) in Greater Portland that could contribute and naming rights would bring in a tidy sum.

This list makes me wonder if the league itself is viable in the mid-to-longer term. Seems that Portland is doing among the best of the teams out there. The USL has only been around since 2019 and I think most teams are currently losing money.

The FIFA world cup and expanded interest in soccer in the US (over football, which is shrinking in high schools) ... will help?
