Commonwealth Avenue Improvement Project

Surprised you like this one...
If they haven't already, they should convert this to a B.U. dorm. Hotels make great dormitories; no modification required.

But make sure the ground floor comes out to the sidewalk with retail.

^ But I bet they "forgot" to include ground floor retail.

/Is Sibler listening?

Sibler is a street, hes no longer in charge

Fall is the best time to plant!

I understand September, but how is the week of the first freeze a good time?

a one story commercial building .

Its actually a classroom building, although a temporary one.

The building wasnt changed. The hotel style parking lot (for loadings and unloading bags) is still there, as is the underground lot. The only way to add street retail would be to destroy part of the parking lot because its a split level. Inside there's a cafe, but only for students.

The only difference between the building as a hotel and now is that the top floor is a study lounge.

Missed opportunity. Harvard did the same thing with the old Holiday Inn on Mass Ave.

I dont think its a missed opportunity. I think it was just a cheap purchase to add capacity. Im sure one day itll be torn down, but why improve an old ugly building?

Ha, MIT is still replacing its "temporary" WWII lab buildings.

If you're referring to Building 20, MIT tore that down years ago to make way for the Stata Center.

Aren't some still around? Quonset huts?

I don't remember anything other than Building 20, even when I went to school there in the late 1970s.

We were talking about street signs just the other day...

Brookline Ave becomes a one way street as drivers ignore visual cues.

Oh, Christ, they went with the ugly street signs. I like the stones in the street though. The intersection now looks like a war for the urban influences of Phoenix and Paris, respectively.

The traffic light armatures need to be painted black as well.

Citgo sign appears to need attention.

Why was the intersection paved with block?

If there's a good reason, why wasn't the Square's remainder included?

The two areas between crosswalks are stone. That is, the ends of the square. The middle of the square, parallel to the bus depot is asphalt.

Possibly a cost issue, possibly a visual thing. Either way I think it looks fine.

Will they scrub off the oil drips from time to time?

I predict that NStar or National Grid will be digging holes in the new pavement within 1 to 2 months after completion.

I predict sooner - the winter moratorium is quickly approaching (or has it already begun?)
