Encore Boston Harbor Casino | 1 Broadway | Everett

So this presents a possible major development opportunity in the area. Unfortunately that development will be lit by candles, but still!

Boston Globe

The old part of the power plant should be redeveloped and casino money would be the only conceivable way to make it happen in our lifetimes.

The newer part of the station shouldn't be shutdown. If anything we need to build out newer capacity here with Pilgrim being shut down and a need for local base load generating capacity.

Re: Wynn Everett Casino | Everett

I didnt even realize that the tower itself has taken over a year to complete. It was on about the 9th floor over a year ago! So its been a year and a few months just on the tower. Thats insanity. Is this the longest timeline ever on a tower that isnt even tall? So its what a year and 3 months and its just finishing now? Holy crap. Idk how I hadnt even really noticed.

This post is from June of 2017 and the tower is just getting going. So a year and 5 months for the tower. Wooooww...

If they don't ever put a pedestrian bridge over to Assembly, they are fools.

A well done pedestrian bridge (with continuity on both sides along the harbor/river) would really be key to tying together the urban fabric of this area. Hope it happens sooner rather than later.

4 or 5 years would be crazy fast speed in Massachusetts time, but maybe there is enough money around this to create some urgency.

there has been talk of a pedestrian bridge over 93 connecting assembly to somerville for at least five years (as it is it's not really walkable in any meaningful way from the bulk of somerville. de facto, assembly is in medford), and nothing has actually happened at all. not sure if there's greater urgency to connect assembly to encore, but i'd wager a similarly slow (non)progress.

The big difference is a potentially interested third party with very deep pockets.

Its not their choice...nor Federal's (owner of ARow). There are about 15 agencies involved and the landing is on DCR land. The MBTA has a stake, Wyn, Federal Realty and Federal government over the waterway. Seems like it will take forever.

The other big difference is that a pedestrian bridge over I-93 would be a terrible pedestrian experience even more than most elevated pedestrian overpasses.

Much better to focus a fraction of the money... like $1 million on widening, aligning and providing better lighting for the existing paths and sidewalks that go under I-93. There is a path that goes between Stop and Shop and the Public Storage building that could be a heck of a lot more pedestrian friendly. Same with the sidewalks along the two underpasses.

I'll repeat my general criticism of the planning approach to pedestrian infrastructure... planners, designers, public officials need to get out of their damn cars and walk some of these pedestrian/bike routes and take pictures and take notes and prioritize the necessary improvements. For relatively small money we could be making big quality of life improvements if more people start paying attention to these sort of details.

I think that for most of East Somerville, a GLX station will be a shorter walk than the Assembly station, given that Assembly is almost at the furthest point from the residential neighborhoods. Prioritizing the connection for pedestrians across the river, given the yuge new development and attraction, is a no-brainer (imho).
