A tower, per the dictionary definition, needs to be significantly taller than it is wide, by a pretty major margin.

The GE HQ building proposed was basically a cube. Certainly not significantly taller than it was wide in either other dimension.

This is incredible.

Nevermind the bridge. Return that wall sign to former glory of visible fade.

They have 1 more row of new windows to cut out vertically down the left of the front facade and a couple more at ground level. Its going to come out really good. The rear building really looks good with its new windows. They really saw something here as far as turning this into an office building and making the blank wall side match.

How people do they employ in MA across it's businesses? I know this "HQ" building is only going to have a few hundred employees.

GE Life Science has about 500 or so in Marlborough, Billerica has several hundred, Lynn still has a couple of thousand. So about 2-3,000 in total? Am I missing anything?

There ain't going to be no Phase II so I edited the thread title.

There's a good chance the building that would have been Phase II will still be built, it just won't be for GE as a tenant. One of the factors contributing to the value of this plot is that plans for the new building are already drawn up and approved. No need for the new developer to through all the approval rigmorale.

Sounds like the flip of this property might have (sadly) been one of the most effective business things GE has done in the past decade...

I'm pretty sure the City/Commonwealth is going to turn a profit on this too.

EDIT: From the Globe, the Commonwealth will make $11 MM in profit off of this.

So true about GE.

Why doesn't the state just create affordable housing on this location? It seems the state is dishing out deals with the corporations start giving back to the community instead.

"They found that more than one-third of the units are owned by limited liability companies, trusts, and other business entities that allow buyers to obscure their identities. Just 36 percent of owners requested the property tax exemption the city offers homeowners — a sign that the owners may live elsewhere most of the time"

I wouldn't be unhappy if this happens, but I don't think so. They'll redesign it to something that looks exactly as unremarkable as the rest of their portfolio.

Some thoughts:

1) I'm not in the business of stock picking, but if anybody thinks GE is going under you can short the stock and make a bundle of money. Maybe a better use of your time than a constant discussion about the company's performance every time some news comes along about this site.

2) Regardless of if and how Phase II plays out, I really like the restoration of these old buildings.

3) I also don't think turning every thread into an affordable housing discussion is helpful especially since we already have a thread dedicated to that where that flawed study about residency got exposed as being riddled with errors right after it came out.

1) Then why is our Politicians so eager to cut GE such generous tax incentives for such a priceless piece of property? GE is going down because of their pension obligations not because of the business model.

2) Agree---I love the restoration of the old buildings.

3) I would rather offer affordable housing for the less fortunate than give the property away with special tax deals to a corporation at this point.

Again, Magic if you think GE's collapse is imminent short the stock and make a bundle of money, which you can then use to build affordable housing for the less fortunate. Neither of those actions however belong in this particular thread.
