New from DOGE...

The GSA recently created a list of non-core federal buildings that may be up for sale or "disposal" as they call it. While I think this whole process is a braindead set of moves from narcissists subverting basic congressional and federal authority...I do hate the JFK Federal Building and would love to see it replaced, perhaps with the workers relocated into some of the abundant vacant buildings elsewhere in the city.

Note the Tip O'Neill building is also slated for disposal.

Good idea? Bad idea? Ham-fisted ketamine-induced fever dream that will be reversed in a matter of days? Efficiency!!!

Nothing will happen. The list includes the Volpe Center in Cambridge. Federal courthouses, regional IRS service centers.

It's a brilliant business idea, really: secure a huge windfall for America by attempting to sell a bunch of dated 70's-80's vintage office buildings during the worst office real estate downturn in the history of the country

Well, there's your answer - the list is gone now: https://www.gsa.gov/real-estate/real-estate-services/real-property-disposition/noncore-property-list . Supposedly, the HQs for FBI, DOJ, etc. were on the list, which I think says the most.

This was like the DOGE claim that about 150-year-olds still receiving Social Security checks, repeated by POTUS.

From the WSJ:
To cheers and laughter from Republicans, President Trump rattled off statistics about how many people over age 100 are in the Social Security database, saying, “money is being paid to many of them.” But those claims have already been largely debunked.

A 2023 inspector general report found that 18.9 million people born in 1920 or before were in the system but very few were actually receiving benefits.

Update here that doesn't impact Boston. Apparently the page is now up to date and lists a grand total of 8 buildings slated for disposal, as opposed to...maybe every federal building in their first draft? Don't know anything about these, but seems more in line with a "targeted" approach at federally owned buildings.

More on this topic if you have a Globe subscription. The McCormack as residential seems promising. The O'Neil should be flattened and that land repurposed.
Yea the mccormack would be perfect for residential. Chicago did this with the tribune building and a few others are coming down the pipeline. The oneill would have been the perfect spot to connect portland street to nashua st, but north station tower is in the way now. Still though if the mccormack is demolished and lonasney is made a one way and the other direction is moved over to cut through the oneill block that would be nice. Then thered be a whole block that could incorporate the last tenement into a nice new little city block and tons of room for new mixed use development.

Just spitballing here, but theres tons of room here that would be free’d up.

-edit: didnt even think of it at the time but if I made the new street diagonal to line up with portland street at the bottom of the pic it would create a triangular block perfect for a flat iron or liberty mutual hq type of building below north station tower.

Conversion of McCormack to housing would be ideal and further my pet favorite idea of making Post Office Square the residential center of downtown Boston through eventual conversions of many of the pre-war buildings in the area. It's on the National Register of Historic Places per the Globe article, which is great, because it's a jewel and should absolutely not be torn down.

This is good but go a step further and use the GSA land for a North/ South rail head house and mechanical venting spot so the tunnel can go unde the Charles with housing and hotels on top, similar to the silver line under the channel. The street could be where th rail tunnel runs.
