Re: YMCA/ Northeastern Dorm (formerly GrandMarc at St. Botolph)

What makes you say the Y is near bankruptcy?

The Y has disappointed me with their refusal to disclose facts to we, the paying members.

In fact on 2/7 YMCA Executive Director Wendy Zinn said that the Y had added over 500 new members in January of 2012.

500 new members in January for the Huntington Y alone or the entire YMCA of MA. Please be more specific, because if it's the latter, then 500 wouldn't make a difference.

NGCBY

Now we can see the real truth

Opponents of the plan vowed to “fight this to the end” and claimed the YMCA had lost their trust. Key among their concerns are......... the move to co-ed saunas, and deeper fears that management is ignoring current members by trying to attract more family and women members

NGCBY = no girl coodies in my pool. Not to mention kiddie pee.

I wonder some of these families might include the minority teenagers jorgenuis was pretending to champion! Who biased now?

Bos -- some of those "members' might have a lot in common wiith the L Street Brownies who objected to women in the dally swims because they were used to having their "members" free to absorb the January sunlight

Opponents of the plan vowed to “fight this to the end” and claimed the YMCA had lost their trust. Key among their concerns are the smaller size of the proposed gym, which is not NCAA regulation sized, the move to co-ed saunas, and deeper fears that management is ignoring current members by trying to attract more family and women members, and that Northeastern will buy the whole building in the future.

“You sold to Northeastern for greed” one disgruntled member yelled out during the meeting.

This section of the article is completely hilarious.

First, the fear of Northeastern buying the whole building when NU first started its programs within the confines of this building.

Second, the YMCA is obviously selling it for greed. That's why the YMCA has no money to pay for the property.

Hey kids, I'm selling my car because I'm greedy, not because I am using the money to pay off my mortgages.

Re: NGCBY

Co-ed saunas would serve no purpose for anyone. Ihe reports from Y members who use the West Roxbury branch have not been positive. The L St. Brownies do not own any property as far as I know.

The 500 members alluded to are from YMCA Executive Director Wendy Zinn's February meeting referring to the January total for the Central Boston branch for the low cost new memberships. "More muscle, less moolah".

I am not "championing" anyone. I have heard complaints about the sauna but I have never heard a complaint from any member that the sauna isn't co-ed.

Please go to savethebostony.com and read the 2006 IMP. N.U. does not in that document make any mention of demolishing the Y gym.

Furthermore N.U. will have to come up with an IMP during this year.

As you may know the NEC will be expanding as well.

Re: YMCA/ Northeastern Dorm (formerly GrandMarc at St. Botolph)

So what you're saying in part is that this development should hinge on your ability to have a satisfactory sauna? And yes, most of us are aware of NEC's expansion plans. I think I can speak for everyone here in saying that their plans are a welcome addition to the city.

Re: YMCA/ Northeastern Dorm (formerly GrandMarc at St. Botolph)

Everyone, one of my favorite hotels recently went out of business. Some developer wants to do something different with the site even though the hotel has been there for a long time and I like it. I even know people from out of town stayed there and they liked it too!

Please got to SaveTheFenwayHowardJohnson.com and voice your displeasure. Change is bad.

Re: YMCA/ Northeastern Dorm (formerly GrandMarc at St. Botolph)

Co-ed saunas!!???? Preposterous!!! Absolutely absurd!! Completely and totally uncivilized!! What's next...co-ed pool times so we have to wear, bathing suits?? Shocking!! Shocking, I say!! Oh, we have that already! Well, I haven't been in the pool since...hmmmmm, '74!'

In keeping with the installation of our new goddess at the MFA -- we should all remember that Roman Baths were always coed and clothing was optional

Technically, isn't Phoenix the one demolishing the Y gym, not Northeastern? Maybe Phoenix has one.

Yeah, look where it got THEM. ;)

Re: NGCBY

The NEC expansion will have the effect of further crowding the already crowded intersection of Huntington and Gainsborough.

Yes, Phoenix/Lincoln will be performing the proposed demolition. Additionally, Phoenix/Lincoln will be operating the "dorm' for at least 15 years after which N.U. has an option to buy.

No, I think that N.U. should have included their plans for the YMCA in their 2006 IMP.

The N.U. plan is based on former City Councilor and N.U. VP for Community Relations John Tobin's assertion that it isn't "economic to develop Gainsborough Garage and Cullinane Hall.

"Everyone"? I think that there are many in the East Fenway who have very mixed feelings regarding the prospect of more students.

Gee, HoJo's offers lifeguard training and after school programs?

Gee, 1100 folks have signed a petition to stop this project?

Gee, a developer would be a private venture rather than a nebulous partenership between a developer and a non-profit?

Ms. Zinn was referring to the Central Boston Huntington Ave. branch.

Joe -- always thought that the HoJo site should be the location of the Boston SuperTall private dorm

200 stories
40 students rooms per story (mix of quads and doubles with some suits for the super rich)
the bottom 5 floors are a 24-hour mall with the 24 hour food and shopping
10 floor underground parking garage with direct entrance from the Turnpike and Storrow Drive
direct underground connections with Kenmore T station
subterranean fitness center and swimming pool

All of the universities in the city are invited to help pay for the project -- they can hang banners with their logos down the side of the tower

Joe -- give it a rest

I read somewhere a while back (I don't know why I didn't have any recollection about it until now)that NEU is planning to produce a new IMP for the next decade, albeit, it's overdue by a year. I'll look for the article but perhaps this project is included in it.

Edit:
Here it is:

http://www.northeastern.edu/news/stories/2012/02/facsen_feb8.html

So perhaps the end of this year we will see it.
