all summer i've been wondering about the black strip on the western face (the mechanical penthouse or where they have those counterweights i've always assumed?). i felt like when i was younger it was a much more pronounced black and older pix seem to confirm this. if that "black" strip has oxidized or otherwise faded over the years, they should swap in some new glass or at least re-glaze the panels or something.
 
i've dug around online a ton and have come up empty -- is the darker strip of windows, third from the top floor on the west side of the tower, the mechanical penthouse? is it purely an aesthetic flourish?
