Logan Airport Capital Projects

I wasn't asking for it in 6 months or to close the airport for any construction. But 4 years seems a little long to me for an above ground parking garage even in the middle of an operating airport.
I think they are just being realistic. Most on-airport construction projects end up severely behind schedule due to overly optimistic expectation that it is just like other commercial construction (it just is not -- every step is much slower).

One interesting tidbit to the parking versus hotel discussion is who parks their car at the airport when travelling internationally? I understand there is alot of money amongst the 44 to 54 million passengers, but paying to park while travelling internationally seems like quite the extravagant expense.

It might be an extravagance for someone really traveling on the cheap or staying with friends/family but in the context of a mid-range weeklong vacation for a couple or a family it’s equivalent to at most 3-5% of the total tab. It’s also not as if any transportation option is completely free or without potential disadvantages.

I will point out that there is some substantial inconsistency in the numbers and dates being reported in the docs. The briefing slides and some Massport docs say $800M, 900k sq, complete in 2030 while the RFQ docs from the same procurement and announced CM contract say its $450M, 725k sqft and has a 2028 completion date. Nothing I've seen so far accounted for that delta, but I chose to report the higher numbers pending the release of more detail.

Imagine arriving on a domestic Delta flight to gate A22 and then needing to transfer to an international Delta flight at Gate E16. Even if/when they do link Terminals A to B post-security, I cannot imagine a Logan Airport that discontinues shuttle bus service between their domestic and international gates. Not without some sort of post-security skytrain/underground link. Even so, it'll certainly be nice to have the post-security link in place.

Massport released the board meeting slide decks for the last few.

From the June 12:

The LEX Framingham garage expansion is moving along with the topping out of the final precast.

Flew into BOS from Barcelona this past weekend on Delta One (our first time, got a great deal)! Stopped in at the new Delta One lounge, one of only four in the country, JFK, LAX, and SEA being the others since we had a few hours layover before catching my flight home! It was basically a very high end restaurant! And very nice. I wanted to share a few pics including views from the club.

I had access to it when I flew Upper Class to London on Virgin about a month after it opened. I was one of maybe 20 people in there at the time. Food, drinks and service were all phenomenal. Biggest gripe is that the view from the bar looks out over the roadway network.

Glad I stopped in there before my flight, since my plane was downgraded from a brand new A339 to one of their oldest A333s with an absolutely horrendous business class seat.

Flew into BOS on the 22nd. I use Logan Express from Woburn - the tracker on the web, and in the terminals said that the next bus from Terminal E was in 56 minutes. That wasn't great news as I was travelling with 3 teens. I told them - Maybe someone like your dad wrote the software, lets wait outside. And the next bus showed up in 26 minutes!!

Displaying worse service than what is provided is not good. I did contemplate taking a Uber to Woburn Logan Express, and then forever not using Logan Express. One of the reasons that I decided to go out and check was that the Framingham route was showing "--". Framingham pulled in before Woburn. And then the "--" switched to 59 minutes, but I bet the next bus was there in 29 minutes.

My guess for the Woburn gotcha was that it wasn't a "regular" Woburn LEX bus. We had a Paul Revere white bus in, and out. But the Framingham one was a red regular bus, so my theory doesn't hold.

As a resident of the Commonwealth, and someone who prefers using public transit, I am not the median user. The median Massachusetts user would most probably drive in the next time around. An out of stater would have a even worse impression of how things are done in these parts..

On the way out, the long term parking lot was full. So, I parked in the short term lot with a pre-paid ticket. Why is short term parking $4 a day, and long term parking in what is essentially the same lot $7 a day? I paid $7/day - and was given a ticket to park in the "short term" parking, which has a usual rate of $4 a day..

The "short-term" lot is normally for daily commuter rail parking and does not normally allow overnight parking, and that's a pretty normal price premium for staying overnight at the MBTA lots.

Oof... I'm pretty sure it's all outsourced. Could see them using their own company bus or even using busses with other Logan Express signage. Coulda just used the 'Framingham' bus.

View attachment 66852A render of the new Term E garage I hadn't seen before. I was at the airport recently and the construction fencing is up and things appear to be happening.

Hmm I hadn't seen that it had changed to this. Went and looked on massport and its up there too, so must be official. There was a few other renders up there too.

I wonder why the A-B connector didn't include connecting the two B piers in this project. The "project success" criteria posted in this thread earlier is that the A-B connector doesn't preclude connecting the gates at the other end but I wonder what else is in the long term plan that would be a 'better' project to use to build the extra connector.

I'm guessing just budgeting/cautious phasing. I'm not 100% sure I understand the A-B Connector photo (slide 54) in those previously linked images, but it seems to suggest they're provisioning for an eventual connection of the B piers with that new elevator bank shown as part of it.

I can't think of any other reason you'd need the elevator bank there, and it seems to align with right in front of the B garage + approximately where door B215 is on the far side. I assume the intention is to eventually build a bridge across with a new door into the upper level(?) above that one and some kind of corridor/vertical circulation into the airside area of that pier by B37/38.

If I'm right about all that - that seems like pretty good/efficient project phasing that shouldn't drive up the costs by splitting it into 2 projects. Basically will have the B1-3 side completed and ready to plug into in the future.

For months, Massport chief executive Rich Davey has been talking up the potential for a “remote terminal” to allow travelers to bypass the security lines at Logan Airport.
Now, Davey is ready to talk about the details. He plans to tell the Massport board of directors on Thursday that he’s going to start testing a remote terminal option in Framingham next summer, at an overflow lot for Massport’s Logan Express bus service. If all goes well, Davey may end up expanding the service to other Logan Express lots, such as those in Braintree and Woburn, as well as the recently rechristened Menino Convention Center in the Seaport.
Massport plans to provide the service out of a temporary trailer in Framingham in June, July, and August of next year. Travelers would go through a Transportation Security Administration checkpoint at the Framingham location and check their bags there, before boarding a secure Logan Express bus. The bus would bring them to either Terminal A or Terminal C, behind security at Logan, on the side of the airport where the jets pull up, and where there are two existing airside bus locations (for passengers who deplane when a gate isn’t available).
