Logan Airport Flights and Airlines Discussion

Globe article today on Delta's growth at Logan: https://www.bostonglobe.com/busines...gan-airport/ckthglHJBmIJlXcdnKITDJ/story.html

Their peak daily departures were 117 a day in 2018, they're aiming for 141 this year and 158 in 2020. Pretty significant growth there. No news on where new destinations will be, though.

My guess is there will be another European Destination for Summer 2020 - (maybe Shannon or they take over Manchester UK from Virgin), Dallas-Fort Worth, and from previous posts Burlington VT or Rochester NY.

They may consider Grand Rapids MI, Madison WI, Omaha or Louisville at some point with an E-Jet or even A220.

San Antonio would be a good A220 route.

I've heard they struggle on SFO but they may need to go to 3x on it.

I don't think they'll have an impact on BA, nor do I think BA is the target (especially at BOS). The target is DL who is their primary competitor at BOS. DL hasn't killed it on the BOS-LHR route, so there's room for B6 to slip in there. I don't know that BA kills the interline agreement either. VS is a BA competitor, and DL/VS are a pretty strong pair. Anything that puts a dent in VS/DL is also a win for BA.

Further evidence that B6 is targeting DL would be the rumors that AMS and CDG are the other two of the top 3 Europe targets for B6.

I'm not sure it will cut into Delta/Virgin all that much either. Their loads to London have been poor but I suspect that most of their customer base consists of business travel limited by corporate contracts or are loyal Delta/SkyTeam flyers.

Avianca is dropping both Bogota and San Salvador in late Spring due to company restructuring.

That's unfortunate. At least Logan will still maintain a year round, non-stop flight to South America with LATAM to Sao Paulo. They've been getting some pretty solid loads.

Opportunity for JetBlue.

And Copa, whilst not technically South America by mere miles, adds the 1-2 dailies to PTY serving similar markets as Avianca.

And it's one stop to most of South America through MIA and FLL.

If Avianca failed I doubt JetBlue could do any better.

You never know..different marketing strategies, codeshare opportunities, and consumer loyalty.

jetBlue has kept Mexico City a daily, whilst AeroMexico has come and gone...again. Avianca was good for beyond BOG/SAL, but US consumers are not familiar with them. They also didn't have much opportunity for Star Alliance support in Boston - although Copa does well. jetBlue would mostly have O/D traffic, but very loyal corporate and leisure customers in BOS and their ~20 international codeshare partners.

It stinks, but with Delta and jetBlue growth, LATAM, and Copa, the market was probably saturated for an ever restructuring airline like Avianca.

WOW ceases all operations. Forever.

Just saw this. I returned from Iceland on Tuesday on WOW. They had started cancelling flights then and things generally seemed off/chaotic. Apparently one of their planes was repossessed in Montreal on Monday and there was news of failed negotiations and no investors. So the writing was on the wall. I feel pretty lucky to have made it out on the 2nd to last flight to Boston.

Icelandair is offering rescue fares. Being march, and not peak travel season to/from Iceland and Europe means most people should be able to get home.

You ARE pretty lucky. Good for you!

What a bummer for European-bound Boston travelers. Unless Icelandair and others step in quickly, I wonder how much WOW's departure will affect international passenger traffic at Logan year-over-year. Keflavik trips were definitely on the rise in recent years.

I will also note that the grounding of the 737 MAX has affected Norwegian flights from PVD, which previously were all 737 MAXes. PVD and BOS share much of the same market area, especially for long low cost flights where people are more likely to drive further to get a better deal.

Icelandair also has a small fleet of 5 737 MAXes, with 11 more set to be delivered over the next 2 years, so that will affect their ability to scale up operations as the summer travel season approaches.

I just noticed from their wiki page how similar WOW's aircraft portfolio is to JetBlue's: Airbus A320-neo, A321-200, and A321-neo. If they're already trying to get to Europe, I wonder if WOW's end opens the door for JetBlue to fill that void (or at the very least to buy their aircraft). Hmmm...

Hopefully not. Icelandair used to have a 3rd daily flight between BOS and KEF, but I don't know if they'll bring it back. I don't see another airline getting in on the route though since KEF-BOS is so strongly served by Icelandair. Maybe a seasonal Delta flight? It's a tough market, though WOW had good load factors from BOS but lot of that is due to the really cheap (and clearly unsustainable) fares.
