Logan Airport Flights and Airlines Discussion

JetBlue merging with AA or Alaska doesn't make sense. JetBlue has a different business model than AA and Alaska.

If AA-US merge, what impact do you see on the Boston market? I'm guessing AA (which would be the name of the merged airline) would stay in OneWorld and leave Star? With AA's and OneWorlds's relationship with JetBlue growing closer, and rumors of Lufthansa selling it's JetBlue stake, could we see US Airways pull-down at Logan?

I realize my mentioned AA-JetBlue-Alaska merger in reality makes little sense, it was more a personal preference as I am not a fan of US Airways.

Logan would not see a big change at all. It would still factor in as a focus city for the combined airline. I also think they would stick with One World as US seems to be the odd step child in the Star Alliance. United is the dominant domestic carrier in that alliance.

Plus, American has the joint ventures with British Airways and Iberia which are nice.

Number through March are out and Logan continues to grow. Up 5.2% for total airport passengers over 2011. Looks to be another record breaking year for the airport.

Any merger causes major reshuffling of gates at Logan, as no airline wants its flights to be in more than one terminal (requiring passengers to go through security again when transferring).

In most cases yes, but this one probably won't. I doubt anything would happen in terms of combining operations until the connector between the sides of B is under construction, at least, and it may actually be possible to jam both airlines into 1 side of B for a short time. In the long run, I expect it will look something like:

A) Delta, maybe also Southwest and Virgin America? Southwest shouldn't be in E, as they have no international flights. Better to have that space go to JetBlue for flights that international passengers would want to connect to (and they have a lot of those counting their interline and codeshare partners).

B) United and American, with each taking roughly 1 side. I'd expect that, since US Airways is the purchaser, it would want to say in its gates, but Massport just dumped some money into the AA side, so they might choose that and leave the current US gates for United. If Massport's financial backing for the connector is coming at all from an agreement with United, at least those gates have to go to them.

C) Jetblue

E) International, Southwest (hopefully not) and perhaps some JetBlue with swing space for new carriers who only need 1 or 2 gates.

EDIT: To respond to Ron without bumping the thread: American will be the surviving name. US Airways is purchasing it out of bankruptcy, but functionally US will be the surviving carrier. The same thing happened when these guys, then called America West, merged with US Airways in the first place.

I thought American was supposed to be the surviving airline in an AA-USAir merger.

I wonder if a new AA will keep the USAir logo? While the eagle is more iconic, the flag is more graphically appealing (and fits just as well with American).

AA is long, long overdue for a restyling of their logo and planes. I'd keep the wings (perhaps with some re-tuning), but AA should use this as an opportunity for an overhaul of their brand to match the 460 planes they've ordered (the largest-ever airplane order) to overhaul their aging fleet.

Their uniforms need updating, too.

I am surprised there was not more mention in the local press about the JAL flight. There were only a couple of very short articles in the Globe and Herald. I also did not see any mention of it on the local news, I must have missed it if they did show something.

According to Massport, the flights for the first 8 weeks are 90% full. Pretty solid to start.

I'll be taking the NRT-BOS flight on May 17. Unfortunately, I'm heading out of Chicago on the 777. I'll bring my camera, although I'm not so sure it's going to be all that far off from current airliners.

I tried to book a pair of trips to Hong Kong with JAL in July and September. Unfortunately on the return leg my two choices were transfer from Haneda to Narita in two and a half hours or have an overnight layover at Narita.

I don't know about JAL, but I showed up for an ANA flight at Narita with 20mins to go and one of their employees shepherded me through security, customs, everything, then ran with my bags to the gate. That is customer service!

Sleeping at Narita, though, I wouldn't recommend. Everyone is corralled into a tiny room, forced to undergo two rounds of interrogation, and then watched by a phalanx of police all night.

Interrogation.......to sleep at the airport?

Not serious interrogation, but still. They had a policeman go around and ask everyone questions (name, ID?, where they were headed, etc.), scribbling down their info on a list. They did this several times, each the same thing...

Seems appropriate. It's an airport after all, not a homeless shelter. If you're traveling, especially long haul, you should have the resources to spend a night in a hotel in these instances.

Kmp -- a couple of years ago there were several people living at Le Grande Charles aka CDG -- due to the London Tube bombings and general Deutschland proclivities and propensities -- I can't image that either in Heathrow or Fraport

It's one thing to sleep in an airport in those sorts of situations, or when weather conditions/strikes have caused mass cancellations(been there, done that) but why people would do it intentionally is beyond me.
